The steering on the ol' delta 88 I found has gone bad after having to move it today. It sounds like the pump....it has a whine to it when I turn and there's a slight whiny sound just when it's running.

The steering functionality isn't too bad, it has lessened, but isn't as stiff as manual steering. So it's still pumping a little, but it's failing........damn :x

I am guessing (pretty certain) it is the pump? Could it be anything else?

how's the fluid?

How long did you run it for when you moved it?

Has it been sitting for a long time in freezing temps without being started?

Well, after taking a closer look, I noticed fluid was leaking out. Not quite sure where though....it appears to be leaking from the pump/reservoir area but not quite sure...one of the lines was just recently replaced.

I ordered a new GM pump along with a used tensioner (off of ebay). That way I hit two birds with one stone...

The used tensioner includes a used pump too....along with the reservoir...so I should be able to get it fixed up good. The new pump is an AC Delco one, from eBay for $50 shipped and the used stuff was $20 shipped.

Hi Brando, hello all

The seal kit for the early pumps is only a couple of bucks at the local mom & pop auto parts store.
I did the '69 pump when I put the PS in the red coupe.

Finished installing the new (used) tensioner and new AC Delco pump. Works great now! The engine seems to run better now too, that tensioner was really messed up! The old one went way too far back...

Also replaced the radiator hose clamps and changed the oil today! What a busy day...

Brando, I need a new tensioner, I think that would quiet things down in the belt train a lot. Whats the deal with tensioners? Do you have to buy a whole big assembly, or can I just do the bearings?

You can either replace the entire tensioner or just the pulley. I had replaced just the pulley, but it still was making noise, so I replaced the tensioner and that was it. Here is the auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7949914458

As you can see, it came with a pump too! You can get a new tensioner assembly from a dealer, the part number is 25527750

You can get a new pulley from any auto parts store, to check if the pulley is the problem, remove the belt and try and move the pulley around. If it doesn't move, then it is good and it's probably the whole tensioner. If you remove the belt and the tensioner goes straight to the power steering pump pulley, you have a problem there. That's the way my old one was.
