Hi All,
I was told recently, that I have no experience with (and therefore, no knowledge of) these engines.
At this point, I need the answer to only one question.
In which of it's many incarnations were flat tappets (lifters) replaced with rollers?

I beleive it was the revision JUST after mine. I've still got tappets under my valve covers, and I have a vin "3" 3.8L. The engine that came JUST before the series 1 3800. Mine is a 1988, although I know these cars came with my motor back in '86.
answer to your question:
Series 1 3800. or Vin "C" motor. |

Thanks for the help. I was hoping for a different answer. Looks like I have to keep digging.
This is the first time I've ever known "Google" to be of such little help.
