Ok im getting my engine rebuilt, but before i install the engine again i wanna take out the AC, the compressor, the belt, and the lines and that round long tank (not sure wat its called). ive decided to leave the AC condensor so it protects the rad from rock chips and road debris. I was just wondering if i take out the AC parts will the windshield defogger stop working? its a 1985 olds cutlass ciera 3.8 litre. My father told me that he thinks it might make it stop working, im gonna try reading the service manuals, any suggestions?

speedy...the biggest problem you're looking at is that if you remove the AC compressor, you'll have to try and find a replacement belt that will be shorter, unless your car doesnt run a serpentine belt. If it does, i'm not sure you'll be able to route the belt properly without the AC compressor in there. I cant remember what year they switched over, but if it has a standard V belt, that doesnt run anything else besides the AC compressor, you should be OK. As far as the defroster not working, thats normally controlled by vacuum on those cars, so if you pull the AC compressor, the belt, the hoses, and accumulator (round silver thingie  ), and leave the rest, you should be OK.

it should still work, the defroster works in cars that the AC is dead in, so i don't see why it wouldn't work for you. it may not work as well, but it will work i think.

Ya for my belts i have 3 separate ones, the most inner one is from the crank pully to the AC compressor pully, the middle one is from the crank pully to the power steering, and the outer one is from the crank pully to the alternator but inbetween it also turns the water pump pully. im glad i dont have the one belt design u see on almost every car these days. so takin the belt wont be a problem, i was just wondering if the AC lines were used for any sort of transporting of air for one of the functions but im guessing its not.

well the AC compressor is always gettin spun by the belt 24/7 and theres no use for it watsoever cause it does not work and i dont really need it anyways. so if i take the belt out there'll be more power for the engine and better fuel effiency if i take out all the AC components because alltogether its quite heavy.

the compressor runs on a clutch so acctually you'll lose very little power unless you turn on your AC which will cause the clutch to engage in your compressor. So basically you won't notice a change in power at all and you won't pic up any power. I would personally keep the AC for hot days, if you plan to race just turn it off

 Now that's a good idea...not sure what's wrong with my AC either....don't even think the compressor works anymore.

I saw a car in which some one actually did that. I have no clue what the internet address was, but he actually wired up solenoids to fire it for him from inside the car! It worked good, but i wonder how the acuracy was!

Let me know how that works, I really wanna see it!

I think you could take it out because lots of old cars have dead a/c and the defroster still works. My dad's 87 Grand Am coupe had a dead a/c and the defroster worked.
