ok, i'll admit. i'm pretty much car-stupid :| i can rattle off facts and look up a lot of information, but when it comes down to it, i really don't know all that much. figured i should get that out of the way in case some explantions got technical.
Now, i'm picking up my new car this weekend(bought a 1989 Olds Toronado Trofeo for 100$ :D), and am interested in getting a little more power out of the 3800 series-I V6 sitting under it's hood.
i've read about said 3800s being supercharged in later model years on several GM cars, but what i'd like to know, is if i bought the supercharger and all related/required parts from a later model year car that still used the 3800-SI(for example a 1992 Bonneville SSEi), would i be able to supercharge the 3800 in my Toronado?
any help is appreciated, thanks in advance :)
(the owner of said bonneville is selling the entire engine seperate from the supercharger as well, so if it's a better bet to just buy the whole engine along with the sc, lemme know and i'll just shoot for the whole kit-and-kaboodle and drop that into the Toronado instead....if that's even possible :| god i need to learn more about this stuff) |

Hi Devolution, hello everyone,

Yes, but there might be a few more "related/required parts" than you expect.

Why do so many people have the need to drop engines on purpose?
But, I digress.
If you can get it, I'd buy the whole donor car to eliminate any possible interchange problems. If so, it would make an interesting project. If not, I wouldn't do it without a lot more experience than you have.
You could also check here for another option. The builder will be along with more.

hmmm the fun part with the Trofeo's (i know i stripped one fer the rear engine in the 442...) is that there are more than a few data lines running from the ECM to the instrument cluster computer and body control computer.
so the "easy" swap of using the SSEi ECM/Harness/engine/supercharger will still require a whole lotta work....and you will be doing plenty of splicing and running new wires....
you would be better off getting the whole engine with the supercharger as you will need all the accesory brackets for a supercharged SI 3800
it may actually be easier to use your harness and just add on the additional wires for the boost control solenoid etc and see about getting a custom PROM made to work with the SC engine yet still retain data transfer to the DIC (Driver information center) cluster and body computer...you may want to check out www.Bonnevilleclub.com as there is a good amount of SI info there...
dont forget google etc. some of the Fiero forums might help as well
also dont forget that if REALLY want to you can get the whole Bonneville...chuck the SC SI (L67) in the back of the Trofeo....
good luck, James |
