Ok, not sure if I've got the term right, but I have some questions about engine roll.

When I step on the gas HARD, I can feel the engine twist due to torque. This is normal I know. But, in my car, I really dont like that feeling. When I hammer the gas from a stop light, it doesnt feel good.

This could be a sign that the engine mounts are ready to be replaced? There is no noise from it yet, but the movement seems too much. Is this why the 3800 (I've got the old 3.8L) has a dog-bone support?

Can I replace the engine mounts with stiffer ones, or do something to reduce the amount of twist? Or am I just getting picky with an old car?

;-) Thanks guys, I look forward to learning what I can about engine roll.

Hi 88delta88, hello everyone,

More than it has in the past? Does it actually feel loose?

The dogbones take mist of the brunt... See what the bushings in them look like, but it may need mounts too...

88coupe,

I dont think its loose. There is no noise, but I can definately feel the engine twist and basically reach its limit on hard throttle, and I feel a slight jerk when it does. Maybe the rubber is starting to rot out? Could I see visible cracking on a bad engine mount? What is the diagnosis procedure for determining how good an engine mount is?

Andrewwk, I dont have a dogbone on my engine. I was wondering if maybe something could be retrofitted, or if the particular mount design of my engine would even allow it. It might make a difference?

Sounds loose to me.

Lift the engine slightly with a floor jack. The side with the broken mount will go up. The side with the good mount won't.

Alternately, the quick and dirty method:
One person watches the engine with the hood up, while the other does a mild power brake. If the engine rocks smoothly, the mounts are still good. If it jerks in both directions, the left (in your case, the front) one is broken.

An engine mount is either good or it's broken.

Originals should last the life of the car. No reason to mod them unless you were to double or triple your present power level.

Thanks norm, I will check that out at my next opportunity. It definately sounds like I might be replacing one. I dont imagine they're too expensive.
