|
|
| I'm getting my dad's 1995 Cutlass Supreme Convertible when I get my lisence, and possibly about 2600 dollars to do what I want with it. What's the best I can do to the car with that amount? BTW, the car has a 160 hp 3100. |

Hi Fleeingpepper, hello everyone,
Welcome to TOC.
Simple question with a very involved answer.
First, I suggest you use this link to search for anything performance oriented, then ask specific questions about anything you don't understand.
Regards, Norm |

| I've searched quite a bit, and, I was thinking that I would put a new air filter, headers, and an exhaust system to start out. I'm wondering which brands would work the best. My friend who knows cars was talking about brands but I forgot which brand of air filter and exhaust system he reccomended. |

You'll get closer to "beating anything" if you go straight here.

Although not as simple or inexpensive, it's the logical choice for most people. A serious gearhead would make it "rear drive", like the factory should have.

You should ask him. He must know a lot about how to make it look and sound cool.
Sorry I can't help any more than that. I don't know anything about brands and stuff like that. I only know how to make cars go fast.
Regards, Norm
EDIT: Should have been more clear about the "rear drive" comment. |

I literally know nothing about performance, but I know the 3100 is not necessarily the best or cheapest engine to mod. The GM 3800 Series II or GM 3800 L67 (Series II Supercharged) are somewhat better platforms to start on. But, however, I hope you like wiring, because those particular engines ECM harnesses are way different (well, duh...)
Don't know exactly why you would want to go fast in a 95 Cuttlass Convert. It's only dangerous to others and youself, but anyways, not going to preach to anybody. Judging by your profile you are only 13, and by the time you have your license you will have changed your mid 14 million times (I know from experience) So, maybe now may not be the time to figure out what you want to do with the car.

With the 2600, personally, I would pimp that convertible out!!! Nice wheels, some chrome, stereo... Convertibles are pimp...
Just my opinion. ;-) |

Realisticly speaking, you arent going to make that car hella fast for that kind of money. There are alot of fast v6s out there, but you will be sacrificing alot of drivibility for the "performance". If it were me, I would make it a super nice car to drive. You've got a convertable, not a sports car. Like 88delta88 said: Nice rims, stereo, and some nice tasteful cosmetic changes will make a world of difference. If you want to race, or street race, get something that lends itself to being a race car. Just because it runs a 16 second quarter mile doesnt mean that it isnt cool. JMHO

Turbo charge it. Or find and old TGP (Turbo grand prix) engine and drop that in there. Sorry to break it to ya but there is no aftermarket for Cutlass Supremes of the 88 - 97 era.
You could also L67 swap but thats dropping in a super charged motor. Like these other guys said, spend the money on making it look nice, because unless you have serious money to invest in first off custom made products for your car, you aren't going to get anywhere.
I would however recommend you do a full tune up including, plugs, wires, air filter, oil change, transmission flush, custom exhaust is a nice way to add a few hp. |

There is an aftermarket for the 3100 but it certainly isn't cheap...

http://www.milzymotorsports.com/
http://www.donkeypunchperformance.com/
along with a few others out there...
some W body sites that have good DIY info etc....
http://mymonte.com/discussion/
www.w-body.com
www.clubgp.com
and a few others out thare as well...
DPP has turbo kits for 3x00 engines that really wake em up even with the factory cam...
lots of stuff out there but many will suggest a 3400 swap (easiest) to L67 swaps (most power)...how thick is yer wallet? |

L67 drop...
(sorry Hans lol)
if you get ~2500 you may want to just swap in an L67, 4t65HD, harness and PCM,
go to 3800pro.com and look up Morad parts (Ed Morad) for whole assemblies...everything |

Thanks James. That makes it considerably more "bang for the buck" than I'd been led to believe.
