What transmission do you plan to use? How much are you willing to spend? Do you know how to swap engines? What do you want to use the car for? A fast daily driver? A weekend toy? A dedicated drag racer? You'll want a different engine for each.

Assuming you mean Olds, yes, a 455 is a big block.

Now, why did you post a suggestion when you do not even know what his needs are?

Are you aware, that by following your advice, he can expect to lose 40 to 50% of his gas mileage? That can be dealt with, but it will affect his budget. Oh, but we don't know what that budget is, do we?

Hi 99jordan, hello everyone,

Welcome to TOC.

I think your use of the word "upgrade" has caused some confusion. What did you mean by it?

Until his goal is defined, a trans choice cannot be made.

OK. Reliability and longevity are priorities, and racing is not a factor.

OK. We have a budget. Now what (if anything) do you want the car to do different, in exchange for that cash?

Regards, Norm

Now we are talking tradeoffs. More power = Higher maintenance, less reliable, and a shorter life. We need to know how fast you want to go, and how much reliability, driveability, comfort, and gas mileage do you want to give up to do it?

Also you need to know that "fast" does not come from the engine alone, but a well planned combination of complimentary mods to the rest of the car.

The question was not relevant and should not have been asked.

Isn't that question the topic of the discussion?

Well, if he has a weak transmission and doesn't want to replace it, that will affect his motor choice.

Norm, I think he wanted to replace the engine, as I read it. He hasnt mentioned anything about what hes currently got.

It's refreshing to meet someone who is honest about their knowledge level. Communication in this medium can be a major problem, so have patience, do the best you can, and we'll do the best we can.

A weak trans (if there is such a thing) would need to be changed, regardless which engine was used.

Your question (as it was asked) only confuses the issue. If you want to discuss it further, either PM me, or start a new thread.

Thread title is "Best Engine to put in 1984 Delta 88 royale?". That may, or may not, be the one that's already in it.

I don't believe he knows. His profile says 307, but that has no bearing on what his "best choice" might be.

Everyone:
Based on the information we have so far, my first choice would cost a minimum of 3x his 2500 budget. We need to narrow it down a bit.

Gas mileage? How about interior sound levels while cruising on the highway? How much comfort do you want to give up?

Quote: ........ i dont know the quality of the current engine ........
Does it leak, smoke, or use oil? Are there any problems you are aware of?

Quote: ........ i need that extra push, nothing thats gonna make it live shorter ........
OK. I think that's covered.

Good, we're getting there.
