I too am amazed at how the small engines can produce that much hp. That's why the cutlass calais can be so fast, small powerful engine, light car =

The Quad 4 was Oldsmobile's small high output engine from 1988(I think) to 1995. It was used in the Cutlass Calais and Achiva cars. When it was introduced, hp was 150@5200 RPM with Max torque 160@4000 RPM. Also in 1988 it was a $600 option on the Cutlass Calais. In some model years, the high output engine put out up to 185hp. The regular one(not high output 2.4 cylinder quad 4) was used as the base engine in the Achiva S coupe.

Matter in fact they were used in Sunfires and Barrettas (sp?). The 91 Quad 4 442 race mid 14s stock according to car and driver and they were banned from SCCA Solo II stock class racing because it turned better stopped better and was faster than other stock factory cars during that time. If I was going to get into Solo II racing or Solo I racing I would use one or a B body spindle converted 80s Cutlass

LOL. You'd probably be better off running the Quad 4. I learned during my first trip to an SCCA Solo II event that they like to set those course up so that only the "dinky" cars can make it through.

My '87 did okay but I had to use the throttle on quite a few turns just to make it around and spun out once out of the 6 runs I made. :D

Here's a video: SCCA SOLO II: Run One

SCCA SOLO II: End of run 2

Psycho, I'm sure you've already seen this as I've posted it many times on Oldspower.

It was a lot of fun with the big car but having the modifications that I do, puts me into SM class (Street Modified) which is anything from my '87 Cutlass to 600HP race cars. :(

I love the quad 4 High output's I will build one some day. They even impress my honda friend. He wants to build one. His car's are very swift ( 90 hatch w/ Ls Vtec & 89 hatch w/ mini-me turbo swap) but he would fear a well built quad 4 calais. I respect him b/c he puts the time in himself, he's switched auto to sticks and swapped many engine parts to get what he's got.
