What is the history of this Forum?
I am puzzled why there are so many different Olds Boards, groups, forums.
Well at least 3 or 4 or more.
Is this an offshoot of one of the others?
Do most of yall use more than one of them?
What is ROP ?
thanks |

Well...I dunno what other's think, that's up to them.
But I started this forum thinking there were no other oldsmobile forums out there, which there weren't many in 2002-just realoldspower.com and oldspower.com as far as I know. It's not an offshoot of any other forum....only Oldsmobiles here all day every day, unlike some other sites (not mentioned).
Started off on a free board....I had no control over it, it was one of those premade site type deals. Then I moved to phpBB, full control on a free host....toc.ish.biz was the address (long gone now). Then I moved to another free host (freehu.com) which turned out to be a scam (owner made us webmasters click ads and then he left with the hosting). Moved to another free host called Wavenom, I helped out a lot around there, had good hosting, but they shut down due to financial problems (now called eznom.net).
So after all that free hosting, I decided it was time to pay up for real hosting (or so I thought).....which turned out to not be so great (jv-hosting.net). Also bought the domain name at that time. After about a year of that....here we are....webhostingbuzz.com
ROP is RealOldsPower.com, a very good site if you're interested in building up an Olds V8, or RWD Olds in general, they have a good knowledge base of people on that there--even Olds powered boats.
Not to say we don't have any knowledgeable people here too....

Thanks Brando,
for the answer and the effort to put the forum together.
I am real interested in board and forum creation as I hope to start one for another interest of mine (Not Olds) . I will PM you with some questions. IYDM.
So when exactly did this one go online? I hope you don't have to ever move again.
Were you able to salvage all the threads from the prior boards you had?
If not did you get any of them?
If your age (19) is correct you had to start all this at age 14 or 15. Man that's awsome that you would have been so inclined at that early age.
I mean did you already have the ride?
Do you invite links being posted to other Olds places & resourses or not? it wasn't quite clear from your answer. When I'm looking for answers I go to as many places as I can find. Since I am new to all Olds boards & forums I figured everyone had seen all the stuff out there.
They all seem to have a little different angle & personality, which is as it should probably be.
thanks |

Because, not everyone has exactly the same interests.

There are, at least 15, and several others that deal with Olds indirectly. There are only 6 that I have any interest in.

There are only 2 that I visit more than twice a month.

Real Olds Power is an offshoot of Olds Racers Online.

Good thinking, if you do not care about the accuracy of those answers.

Don't mind at all, I'd be happy to help.
This current forum/database went online 06 Jun 2003 03:58 pm.
Everything before that was lost....it wasn't much, but some was lost.
Yes, I started it at the age of 14...pretty funny actually...I couldn't even drive yet... I knew I was getting the 1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale from my mom, I chose it over a 1981 Buick Regal Limited.
Do I invite links being posted to other Olds places and resources? You mean posting a link to this site on another olds site? Sure, if it's okay with that site...some would consider it spam.
I do have this site posted in several databases...we finally made it somewhat reasonable on Google (4th page with search for "Oldsmobile").

Brando, I've been doing "link management" for my dad's online company. Apparently, two-way reciprocal links from site to site (as JMB99 suggested), can produce way better page ranks on the search engines.
You link to them, in a links section, and they link to you on thier links section. The search engines see your site in more places, and you move up in the digital world. It also provides help for the other link partner, and they move up also. The more places your site address is seen by the engine the better. |

Yea...that's how we got on the fourth page...we're linked on gmpartsdirect.com links page, dmoz.org, wikipedia....several sites.
It also helps that I registered the domain for 4 years at a time instead of 1.

In the case of my dad's site, we've got just under a thousand links... Its a breeze to manage with the software. It also means just under a thousand links are active back to us. It doesnt have to be related material either.
The software goes through all posted links upon the push of a button, and ensures the other site is holding true to thier side of the deal also, and flushes the ones who dump your link. Its free server software, managed through web browser called "Ducan Carver's Link Assistant".
Do you want me to add a Olds Connection link on our site? If so, I beleive I can even put a banner on. |

Won't that overload the search engine bot? From what I understand...it might think the site is just a bunch of ads and disregard it if you have too many links...
What is the site?
How many links do you have?

"Hallelullya Sapphire....I done found the spot.
Aint gonna need them (other) sites no longer Aint gonna need them sites no more"
Norm, are you taking your condescention meds?
They aint workin' !
Now that I've found you to be so forthcoming with the unquestionable accurate gospel of all things Olds, I can just quit going to alternate sources ...right?
That should free up some time for me to go to the circus and watch out for more clowns. And while there I can look for another one trick pony too. |
