I bought the can of R134 coolant which has an adaptor on the end of the hose to hook up to the system to recharge it. Unfortunately, it seems like the adaptor is to big. Could my system still be an R12? I thought that was for older cars. If so, I will have to take it somewhere to have it done. Any advice?

I would have it done somewhere. If you lack the proper equipment to pull a vac on the system, then you are quite possibly waisting time with doing it yourself. Chances are if it doesnt work, there is a leak somewhere. JMHO

1992 I beleive was still using R12, not certain though. My mom had a 92 pontiac transsport and they had a hell of a time getting someone to recharge it, due to R12 refridgerant. It was a canadian vehicle though, not sure about american vehicles of the same age.

Hi laurig99, hello everyone,
Welcome to TOC.

Always a good idea for someone without experience. Alternative is to find someone to walk you thru it, in person. If you've done it before, please disregard.

If the refrigerant is actually low, there is a leak. The problem might be caused by something other than low refrigerant. Gauge set will accurately diagnose the problem.

Took the car to a mechanic. Found out that it does still have the R12 system; not retrofitted for R134. Also has a leak, so I guess no air conditioner this year. Thanks for all the help. :)
