So yesterday i was on my way to my girlfriends house, just rolling at a cool 40 down the street, when this 94-96? firebird goes flying by. Didn't care, but after 5 seconds I thought, eh, and started catching up. When I caught up to him we were doing about 55 but then he started gaining more speed, so I caught up. Then I just gunned it and went full throttle, and so did he, I heard his engine reving. Then at around 75 I am not sure what happened, but my car jerked like its switching into gears and just took off.
But I was already in third gear, so what the hell was that? Did the torque converter lock up or something? It just started picking up crazy speed and was pulling away from the firebird with ease. The needle was past the 85mph mark by the time I started slowing down.
SO what can make the car feel like it went into another geat with a three speed trans? |

Note, that I do not respond to the stupid parts.

I will read this to mean, your rate of acceleration increased. As if, the trans went into second (passing) gear.

It went into second gear? If it had gone into "fourth" gear, your rate of acceleration would have decreased.

If you have a "lockup" converter, and it was working properly, it would not "lock up" under WOT. If it had, your rate of acceleration would have decreased.

HDN/ER, is that you?

It went into another gear.

No No No. I was already in third gear doing 75 when it jerked back a little, like the trans was shifting again, but there is no 4th gear. after the jerk it started accelerating really fast, yes.

So are you saying the RPM's went down when it "jerked?" |

No not really, as far as I know they stayed the same, but paused when the "jerk" happened. I've got to hook up a tach meter to it. What can you guys recommend for around $40-50 buks? |

Double that, and I'll see what I can find.

However slim, the possibility exists, that it is related to your carb problem. Until I can verify that, I will stand by my previous statement.
