the rear bumper on my 78 cutlass salon is in bad shape, the inner support is about 70% rusted away, and I need to be searching the junkyards around me, to find another one. is the rear bumper the same between the cutlass salon, and a regular cutlass?? what years interchange?

It should be the G-body platform, and any other G-body bumper should fit, although it may not look exactly like what is there.
G-body cars were made from 1978-1987, and consisted of the Cutlass, Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Regal, etc.
They were all weak in the area you describe. Most that I have looked at here in the IA rust belt have the same sort of rust you describe.
