Hi all-

I have been "hired" by a friend to do a sub install in an 03 silverado regular cab pickup. Is there any place that sells narrow components, and if so, what would I be losing by using them?

I plan on building the box, and I am sure a shallower speaker would require less volume, but I wonder if say a narrow 10 will sound the same as a regular sized 8.

Any suggestions on type/size/amp/etc would be appreciated.

I've spend basically the entire summer looking for the right system for my car. (Pioneer seems to be winning)While i was searching, i came across Pioneer sub woofers a lot. They make shallow ones that dont take up much space.

Ive been using this website as a price reference for a while now to see where i could get the cheapest units. They seem to be pretty good woofers.

Anyway, im new to the sound system arena, so dont make any decisions solely on my response.

I've done plenty of car audio- just looking for ideas for a slim sub install-

Right now I am leaning towards Elemental Designs for the sub-

I will make and port the box, and will probably use a cheap amp of some sort to power it.

Sub range will be 60-300 watts RMS- Not sure if I will go 2 or 4 ohm... I know brando has had luck, or has knowledge of good quality off brand amps-

Deck is a new Alpine, front speakers are some pioneer job my buddy got cheap from a going out of business sale.

My main question is that would I be better off with normal depth 8 than a thin 10?

Yea, I can get amps real cheap now, because I can repair them.... :lol:

I was going to recommend the ED SQ10 sub also, Parts Express has a sub made by Tang Band...it's the exact same sub, single 4 ohm. ED said Tang Band copied them....doubtful, most likely the other way around.

Pioneer, Blaupunkt, and Kenwood make/made slim subs....but from what I've read, they aren't that special.

There is no replacement for displacement....that should answer the last question. Depends on (Sd) cone surface area and the excursion (Xmax).

Regular cab....not much space to work with, good luck! :D Ported would probably be the best bet, to get the most output.

As for an amp, what's the budget?

The budget is "meh". The guy is a millwright, and he goes around the country as a welder for those big wind turbine electric generators. He said money isn't an issue, so long as it is nice quality, and isn't insanely expensive. I figure 70 bucks for that SQ 10, and spend as much as needed to get a good amp to power the sub to its potential. Any suggestions?

ED only has the s2 in stock, so looks like we are going 2 ohm... I am going to port the box to ED specs-should be a fun project-

What do you think is a fair price to charge for installation?
