Don't apologize. Most Yanks do not know, either.

The car was made about the time the US Government forced the metric system on us. Most packagers changed from English to metric systems overnight, and we had to live with it.

Gas pumps, however, could not be changed as easily, or quickly, so the conversion had to take place over several months. During that time, a funny thing happened.

Sales at outlets that sold liters, dropped to near nothing, while sales at those who still sold gallons, increased by a like amount. The offending pumps were quietly converted back to gallons and, in time, our roadsigns were changed back to miles/MPH.

The people spoke, without saying anything.

Then again, your car may have been intended for export to England. Or was it UK, in '78?

Is there no possibility it was a Canadian car? ;-) We've been metric for longer than I've been around, since 1970, if I remember "history" class right.
