The reason that some speakers are being designed to play above the audible (to humans) frequency range is to make the sound more realistic. An explanation of this is that when you hear (for example) a cymbal crash, part of what identifies that as a cymbal crash is not only the actual true tones radiating from the cymbal, but the harmonic overtones as well.

If a speaker does not reproduce frequencies above 20kHz, then it does not relay the harmonics and supersonic frequencies that would normally be implied. This may not take away from the speaker that does not play above 20kHz in as much as it would add realism to the speaker that does.
