Hello there fellow olds owners. So the other day I was checking up on all my fluids and I noticed two things: First, in my coolant resevoir tank it looks like there's oil in the bottom of it... I'm sure this can't be good... but I checked the inside of the oil filler cap and there's no white foam indicating I'm burning coolant, also my oil hasn't lowered either. Second my transmission fluid... when I wipe the dipstick on a paper towel it looks like there black grease coming off the dipstick... and the fluid is a bit low as well...
Now I love my 1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme SL but the bottom of it is pretty rusted out... (I'll try and post pictures one day) do you think it's worth putting money into it? I would love to keep this car for many years... Well thanks for reading my first post... I'll try and be an active member in this community. |

| it would likely be worth finding out what the problem is, even if the repair is not worth it. Might be simple. |

Hi smitty5ca,
Welcome to TOC.
Quote: ........ there's oil in the bottom of it ........
An indication that oil is leaking into your cooling system. How much oil? In what time period? And is it replacing or displacing the coolant?
Quote: ........ I'm sure this can't be good ........
Until you learn otherwise, I'm sure you are right.
Quote: ........ I checked the inside of the oil filler cap and there's no white foam ........
An indication that coolant is not leaking into your crankcase. Thats a good sign.
Quote: ........ indicating I'm burning coolant ........
In order to burn anything, it would have to be in the combustion chamber and its residue would go out the exhaust, not into the crankcase.
Quote: ........ also my oil hasn't lowered either ........
A certain amount of oil leakage/consumption, over time, is normal. This goes back to how much oil, and how much time.
If the level was rising, it would be a bad sign.
Quote: ........ my transmission fluid ........
Different topic, but,
Quote: ........ it looks like there black grease ........ the fluid is a bit low as well ........
A good indication that the trans has been badly neglected.
Whether you can do it yourself, or not, have a reputable trans specialist do the PM (periodic maintenance) on it. At that time he/she can warn you, in advance, of any potential problems.
Or, if you are so inclined, you can believe our resident "expert",

Hey there,
I don't know much about all your problems but I have a 93 Olds Cut Supreme and I've had trouble with low trany fluid. I just check it every now and then and refill it when it needs it. I know what you mean about the rust. Ive got rust on the front quarter panel next to the drivers door and the passenger door and a patch running down the side below the gas cap. I've also had the tube from my water pump that runs under my coolant overflow reservoir and up to the firewall, rust out on me when changing my water pump and I replaced it with heater hose. Alot of Cutlass Supremes are similar so look out for that. Hope you get everything fixed. |

| Ok... thanks a lot for your suggestions, im going to take them into strong consideration. I'm thinking I will bring it into a transmission specialist and let them change the fluid/filter. Also I'm going to buy some engine shampoo and clean up the engine compartment... hopefully it is just oil that has accumulated there over time. Thanks again. Bye for now! |

good idea, a competent technician will be able to diagnose the condition of your transmission by the characteristics of the fluid and the contents of the filter.
I'd recommend having them take a look at your oil in coolant problem as well, could be a serious problem not to be ignored.
