| i did some research and i figured out a lot of people have problems like this. i would like to know what really happened. i just got the car today knowing the speedometer did not work. it is a 1985 toronado. the story is he was going down the road and he heard a "boink" sound and the speedometer dropped to zero. what could this possible be. i am also unsure how to get behind it. i started talking the front panel off and i need to somehow get that knob off the thing for the lights. its either the cable that broke or the speedometer itself. oh and the odometer does not work aswell. if anyone can help me i would really appreciate that. |

Hi aron115,

If they both stopped working at the same time, odds are, the cable is broken. It is possible, but very unlikely, that the drive or a driven gear is the problem.

Hello,
Welcome to TOC.
The price for the repair will depend on the shop. I would guess they would charge a couple hours, at their hourly rate for the repair, plus the cost of the part.
If you are wanting to tackle this yourself, and any other projects you may encounter, you will want to invest in a FSM, or Factory Service Manual. A good manual will show you the procedure you need to follow to repair it, as well as offer some troubleshooting guides.
That said, you will need to find a way to get to the back side of the cluster. In most cases, it is easiest to remove it.
Hope this helps,
Andrew |
