I am having issues with my heater. Here are some of the symptoms of the problem and some of the quirks I have noticed...

1. Only the vents on the driver side blow hot air.
2. The defrost and the floor vents blow cold air.
3. No matter if I use the passenger zone and set it on hot, it still blows cold.
4. If someone is riding in the passenger seat, the heater works all around.

Is there some sort of weird sensor in the passenger seat that makes the heater work over there? Is there a fuse for the different zones that could be bad? I have looked in my maintenance manual and have found nothing answering these questions. Please help as the cold weather is coming fast and the heater situation sucks.

I had a somewhat similar problem with my car before the snow hit here. It's very possible that your passenger temperature actuator has failed. I can't explain why it works fine when there is a passenger in the vehicle, as there is no sensor in the seat, except possibly for the Airbag system(the electrical systems changed a lot from 1994 to 1995, due to OBD2, so I am unsure about the sensor, my car, however does not have a seat sensor), and that is not used for climate control decisions. The actuator is somewhat accessible, you can see it if you remove the glove box. It is on top of the heater ducting, on your right if you are facing the front of the vehicle. Take a look at it when you change the temperature from hot to cold and see if it moves. The position sensor was messed in mine so it just kept going back and forth, yours might not move at all. Normally it will move the passenger blend door from hot, stop, then you command the temperature to be cold, and it will move to full cold position and stop. The temporary solution if your actuator is not working properly is to unplug it, run the vehicle on full fan speed, and move the unplugged actuator until you get full heat on the passenger side, then leave it there for the winter until you can get a working replacement in there.

Are you sure? we had a 1993 Regency 98 and I seem to remember something tricky about the dual zone heater, like a sensor in the seat... not 100% sure on that though.

I could be wrong, I'll check into it at work, They have all the service manuals for GM there. Everything else I'm sure about, I've just never heard of a seat sensor that is used by the HVAC system. Allthough that doesn't really explain why it doesn't work properly when there is no person in the passenger seat. It only indicates the sensor is working fine and there is a problem with the controller or the actuator.

I found the actuator behind the glovebox. It will move to the cold air side but not back to the hot. I zip tied it to the hot for the winter. Thanks for the help. It is so nice having heat again. :D

Gotta love the search function.(search cold+passenger=this thread) I have the same issue in my car, no passenger heat and I'm going to try that trick, too. Thanks!

EDIT: it worked!! Thanks! In the process of removing the glovebox I realized it wasn't necessary. I simply emptied the glovebox and pushed down on the rubber tabs that keep it from dropping down. It then dropped cleanly down and out of the way. I opened the valve as mentioned and instantly had warm air. I even found a double cassette that had dropped down in, probably from the original owner.

Thanks for the help in getting more heat.

An audio book read by Ed Asner, Murder at Kennedy Center
Puts the "Old" in Oldsmobile
I was ready to chuck it but my son saved it from the trash. :)
