I know I need to bring it into a mechanic for a full overhaul, but I thought maybe someone here would know better first.

I was driving just fine the other day when the steering wheel on my 1994 98 olds suddenly locked up, it wouldn't move. The brakes were also hard to hit without really slamming on them (and then the car responded like I was hitting the brakes like normal). All the lights on the dash lit up and it was pretty dangerous. Luckily the road itself wasn't curving or I'd have been in real trouble.

After stopping, I put the car into park at the nearest light and turned the engine off. I restarted the engine a split second later and the car worked just fine(!!!)

Later on, I checked the engine coolant, oil, brake fluid, and transmission fluid- they were all fine. The power steering was a bit low but this wouldn't affect the brakes ... would it?

Does anyone have any ideas?

Also, much less important, the radio antennae doesn't go down all the way in the trunk when you shut the car off. It stays up about an inch high. Would that drain the battery?

THANK YOU!

sounds to me like your engine shut off, for whatever reason, i would have the electrical system checked out for sure alternator, battery tests and also inspect your belt/belt tensioner to make sure your in good shape , glad you didnt crash though! it also shouldnt have locked the steering wheel so have your mechanic check your ign lock cylinder and related parts...
