my last alternator was making a lot of noise and such and it wasnt the belt so i got a new alternator for my car. when i took the old plug out it looked like shit so i replaced it. one of the wires came out of that plug also. i think i have everything wired up but the charge light comes on and after a while of running the check engine light comes on. i was driving down the road thinking everything was good and all my electrical stuff turned off. all i had on was the radio no subs and the defrost. the car is a 85 toronado. i bought the haynes manual and the wiring is iffy. how i have it is one wire from the plug is going back to the alternator with an eye hook and there is another eye hook going to the battery. the other wire from the plug is going to the wiring harness. is that correct? somehow i might have messed that up but it is unlikely.

the charge light goes on right when you start the vehicle and its really weird. some times its dim others the light is bright. when all my electronic stuff went off that light went off to. i think i have it set up right but what do i know. that diagram doesnt make complete sense to me. there is no other way i could hook it up though so it must be right. i have no idea whats wrong. i checked all the fuses.

my brother took a volt meter with some of the connections and the wire that goes to the battery is bad so he is gonna buy a new one for me and put it on. hopefully that will fix my problem. i wonder how something like that would go bad

As you have discovered, it's a sign of a loose connection.

If there is no visible damage, the wire is OK. One/both of the connector/connections, in that circuit, is the cause.

there was a little damage with that wire but i didnt think it was enough to effect it. oh and also the intake manifold gasket is leaking so there is antifreeze and stuff on that wire. that cant help

proper belt tension comes to mind...also where the alternator mounts, is it clean from dirt?

He already covered both possibilities.

alright so i had an amp wire kit laying around and i got some eye hooks. i took that wire for power and ran it from the alternator to the battery. might not be the best thing to do but it charges. its still makes noise. i had my subs on and he said he could hear the alternator working at its max. i only have a friggin 200watt amp with a cap. i dont know why that would be doing that. it still makes noise with acceleration. i bet there is coolant on the belt from the intake manifold because that gasket is leaking. im assuming it will stop making noise when i get that fixed next week. you were definitly right about that connection part. intake manifold gasket sounds fun doesnt it? thank you for helping me with the alternator problem.
