Hey all-

Trying my hand at linux, poorly. I am attempting to install Ubuntu Studio 7.10 on my old sony vaio laptop, and I am having some issues- It says "no installable kernel found"

I downloaded it from Ubuntu's site, and ripped the iso with InfraRecorder.

Anyone familiar enough with this stuff to have a clue as to what could be happening?

Laptop specs are- AMD athlon 1ghz, 256MB ram, 20GB hard drive.

Thanks-

Andrew

Ripped? Did you mean burned, from the hard drive? Did you verify the md5 sum (hash) of the .iso file, before burning?

Not familiar with Infra Recorder. I've had issues with some burning software vs ISO, finally settled on cdburnerxp. No problems for well over a year.

Some of the later (at the time) Linux distros didn't install properly. I had better luck with earlier versions, Ubuntu and Mepis, in particular.

Running Mepis and XP on my latest: A7V600-X / XP-2800 Barton.

Sorry, bad terminology on my part- I did mean burned. I don't understand what you mean by verifying the md5 sum- I haven't used linux before.

I just tried Ubuntu desktop 6.06.1 and I can run it from the live CD. I am attempting an install as we speak.

I didn't provide much info before- When trying to install the studio version, I could get to "installing the base system" and once it reached 70 percent completion, it just froze there, and in about 5 mins it would tell me that no installable kernel was found.

I tried burning a new DVD of the OS, to see if maybe I had a corrupt disc, but it did the same thing. Also, the studio version does not have the live cd feature, like 6.06.1 does-

So far this more basic version seems to be installing properly... hopefully I can figure out how to get studio working. The reason I want to use studio is for my band- I use a laptop in my live rig, and I think some latency issues I have been having with windows may be solvable with Ubuntu Studio.

I have also been watching the Ubuntu forums, but they don't seem to provide much insight, mostly odd obscure problems-

Thanks for the help Norm-

Andrew

Sounds familiar.

You're looking for a corrupt download. The bigger (longer) the file (download) the more chance for corruption.

That makes sense- And after running that check, it turns out the check sums are different- I guess that's why 7.10 didn't work. I'll have to re-download it later.

The install that I tried earlier froze up around the 83 percent mark, while scanning security repositories- That .iso file checks out fine according to the md5 utility, next step is to check the disc I assume?

Thanks again for your help Norm, you have been very helpful!

Ok, checked the disc on my desktop computer, and it is a-ok. I will try another install...

The install stalls at 83% window says "configuring apt" "scanning the security updates repository"

I am not sure what is happening, but for the time being I am installing Windows 2000 on it so I can use it for class tomorrow- hopefully I can do some research and figure out what exactly is going on-

Downloaded it after my last post. Used my 867, P-2, Gateway with Win 2K. Checksum was different. Trying it again with Mepis OS. Haven't used the "P2P" type helpers because of my own security concerns. I'll try that download, this time.

Shouldn't make any difference, but I have some time I can invest.

Good OS. I use it on all, but one, of my machines.

So far, this is where I am at today-

I re-downloaded 7.10, and did the md5 check, and it came out good. I burned the iso to disc, and checked the integrity of the burn. That too is good. I can run both the 6.06.1 and now the 7.10 from their respective Live CD's, but I have not attempted another install yet. My plan for this evening is to research more, and try another install, and hopefully get past the apt problems I am having.

I am wondering if it wants internet access during the install for some reason- I might try it with it hooked up to the internet.

Other than for updates after the install, I doubt it.

Tried five different updates/installs yesterday. They all worked fine, except they couldn't find my NIC card. Earlier versions do, latest don't.

I must have a hardware issue. I installed it on my desktop with no issues- On the laptop, it still hangs up in the same place, but I haven't changed much of anything when I am trying to install.

I am thinking that my CD-ROM drive on my laptop may be the culprit, but it will install Win2k just fine. However, when the installation stops, the CD-ROM drive is not spinning the disc. I think I will try a slave drive sometime this weekend, but I don't think that will get me closer to my goal.

Should I try a text-based install, or would I be wasting my time?

Thanks again for taking some time to help me out with this-
