Hey all-
I finally found a way to go fast and race, while being a broke college student. I may not be able to get the adrenaline rush of acceleration, but I get the rush of racing, which will do for now.
I am talking, of course, about an R/C car. I feel like a little kid driving the thing, but it's a blast. The local hobby shop was going out of business and were having a big sale so I went in to see what they had left, and I found a good deal on a car, so I bought it. There is a local racing scene here, and it starts in a month. There is a class of cars like mine, restricted to the stock motor, so I should be very competitive.
I don't have any pics of my actual car, but I do of one like it-
It's not exactly the same, but I have the same model.
Top speed is about 30mph, depending on gearing. It's 4wd, shaft drive, and anything that rotates rides on ball bearings. It's powered by a little electric motor. 4 wheel independent suspension, oil filled, threaded shocks, and a completely adjustable suspension in terms of camber and toe. For how small it is (1/18th scale) its really quite remarkable the technology it has.
The even better thing is- they are super cheap to fix. Most parts are in the 2-3 dollar range, some a bit more than that, but nothing compared to breaking a full-size race car. Since the hobby shop was selling everything at half price or lower, I bought a bunch of spare parts and that will save me money too.
New toys are always fun, no matter what size they are :)

| I've always thought R/C cars were cool. I took a basic machining class a couple years back and we modified one that was a rock crawler with a truck body on it into a low rider with an el camino body on it. 8-) |

What a bunch of crap, that crap will wear those engines down so damn quick. They only last a few gallons without anything; might last 1 with the NX kit. Mind you stock those engines turn over 30,000 rpms. |

Very cool andrew. I just got into RC planes a month ago myself, and must say it is very cool. The absolute best part is breaking something, and trying to find a way to repair it. I've crashed my plane more times than not, but thats the learning curve... |

Thought I'd post some pics of my car-
Turns out I have a bit of learning to do- I broke the input shaft clean off the servo that I just got last week- The walls are not very forgiving in my hallway, lol. But I am getting better at keeping it on its wheels while maintaining decent speed- Learning throttle control with an index finger is an interesting experience.
Anyway, here's the pics.
Here you can see where the servo goes, and just how tight everything is packed into the frame.
And the design of the bottom- They cut the hole in the frame for cooling, but it is also a danger, if you run into a puddle- bye bye electronics.
