If there is a loud knock (not a tick, but a knock) that is consistent with variations in RPM, and it was driven 12 miles in an overheated condition, it is probably safe to assume he has major engine problems that warrant pulling the engine, and examining all components for wear, and rebuilding the engine. You can try to diagnose the specific problem all day on the internet, but that still doesn't change the fact the engine needs to be torn down. Any specifics will be realized when the engine is torn down.

Soinsincere, if/when you have the 307 rebuilt, there are a few other things to consider, other than what Norm has already suggested-
Since it was driven quite a distance in an overheated state, I would have the block and heads checked for cracks. I am not sure how much that will cost in your area, but any local machine shop should be able to do this for you.
I am assuming this procedure is included in Norm's 1600 dollar estimate, as it is standard operating procedure for any competent shop that does engine work.
