Take the Catalytic Converter off. They restrict the flow so much they basically act as a muffler.

dont i need some kind of backpressure? i thought it was bad to take the cat off because that could be bad for the engine

Can't say anything about what it does to an engine, other than make it louder and fail inspection. I honestly don't know.

My converter is starting to rust through, and when it goes, I'm replacing it with a high-flow cat.

I wanted a louder car, so I put a Flowmaster Delta 40 on it, but I was really really disappointed. The flowmaster muffler is great, but my converter really does seem to be whats holding back that lovely V8 noise.

My car w/ Flowmaster 40
This is what I want it to sound like.
The first part, not open headers. That's dumb.

First off, loud aint always better. and over time you will regret having your exhaust that loud, but to get to the point, find a set of headers, either get a high flow y-pipe setup or run true duals.

None of these by themselves will make your car louder.

If there is no emissions testing in your area, you can remove the catalytic converter with no ill effects. It is technically illegal to remove the catalytic converter, but if you do it yourself, there is a 99.999 percent chance you will never be bothered because of it.

If you want it really loud, remove the converter, and run straight pipe-

If you want a real "raspy" sound, a generic glasspack muffler will do the trick.

If you want a more tuned sound, but still throaty, there are a number of mufflers that will help provide that sort of exhaust note. Flowmaster, Magnaflow, and Hooker Areo Chamber are a few examples. Of course, there are generic versions as well.

I would check in to local noise ordinance laws before making it too loud. The last thing you want is a car that is so loud you get pulled over all the time for it.

If you're gonna do THAT, do it right, for Christs sake...

Not that I approve of this sort of thing at all.
Exhausts should NEVER, EVER, EVER sound likeTHIS
If it sounds like that, either kill yourself, or put the stock exhaust back on.

If it sounds like this
That's good, but then you need to shoot for something like this

im pretty sure my neighbors would call the cops if i had a whistler tip. looks awesome though. i piss them off enough with my subs. so if i take my cat off. my car with be a lot louder? too loud, never. well the law for noise for music is 100db around here and my subs do 125db in the car so yeah im already breaking the law. where i live i dont have to go for emissions so im good there. i think i might take the cat off. but i really need to do my exhaust right. i need to attach some hangers. sounds like a nice saturday project to me.

Find where the headers go into one pipe, and cut a nice foot long section of pipe off. Dump those headers right under the engine. :D

Theres been cases where people have put Flowmaster on and Hated the sound. But then they put on a resonator to change the pitch of the sound and it sounded wonderful.

Flowmaster uses Helmholtz resonators. and in a nutshell its like blowing over a coke bottle. different amounts of liquid produce different sounds. So if you don't like the sound you have then maybe instead of spending more money on a different muffler try a resonator.

has any one else done this?

No.

Norm is right. People think you NEED back pressure. Anyone that says you need it doesn't really know whats taking place. Back pressure doesn't allow proper scavenging to take place. You want velocity, not back pressure. this would be good for another thread.

Already covered in the opening post. Here it is again:

aron115 wrote: ........ i wanted a loud sound from it ask im a teenager and that is we aim for ........
And repeated in post #10.

aron115 wrote: ........ too loud, never ........
He wants loud, not better.

How will that change the volume, velocity, pressure, or heat, of the gases from the combustion chamber, and therefore, the amplitude, as applied to this topic?

Or, is this another of your "alternatives".

How would that make it louder?

oldsguy88 wrote: ........ Flowmaster uses Helmholtz resonators ........

Show us the Helmholtz chamber.

Then tell us how it might make his exhaust louder.

oldsguy88 wrote: ........ has any one else done this? ........
Yes. I did not, however, verify the results, of my exhaust changes, on a flow bench.

oldsguy88 wrote: ........ Norm is right ........
We do not need anyone to tell us I am right.

oldsguy88 wrote: ........ Back pressure doesn't allow proper scavenging to take place ........
And we do not need anyone putting words in my mouth

In this case, scavenging has nothing to do with anything.

oldsguy88 wrote: ........ You want velocity, not back pressure ........
And in this case, velocity has nothing to do with anything.

To clarify, neither scavenging or velocity, have anything to do with making it louder.

It would be far better than continuing your hijack.

To the OP

Cut your pipes, run open headers. That's as loud as it's gonna get.
