Hi, could anyone point me in the right direction? I have a 2000 Bravada. While driving, [and this is intermittent] when the heater is on; usually above 70F, the water temperature gauge creeps to 260+ and check engine light comes on. If I turn the heater to cold, the temperature gauge goes back to normal. I checked and have all fluids and coolants at correct working levels.
Does this sound like my thermostat is bad? :( |

When you have the heater on, does it blow cold air...or is it warm?

| It alternates between blowing cold air and hot air . The overheat condition comes on when the heater blows hot air in the car. As soon as it overheats, I turn the heater to cold and the gauge drops back to 120. |

| 120 on your temp gauge is some kind of malfunction, if youre at full operating temp, you should be sitting around 200 degress + or -, but not 120, have you had the cooling system flushed yet? Dex-cool can cause some serious problems if not properly maintained, I would recomend you take care of your thermostat, and have your whole cooling system flushed. |

| You're right, that was a mis-type. It's 210 not 120. I am planning on flushing the radiator and change the thermostat this week-end. We'll see if that fixes the problems. :blush: |

Does not sound like it is overheating. That means, it has nothing to do with cooling system, which, includes the thermostat.

Coolant temps do not rise and fall instantly.
Look for an electrical (short or open circuit) connection, between the temp sender and the gauge.

| Besides what 88 coupe mentioned,do you notice a check engine light on during this problem? |

More bogus advice from our resident BS artist, who seems "gets off" by telling people to waste their money.

A cooling system "flush" is not the solution to a cooling problem. It is, simply, part of a normal coolant replacement, during the normal maintenance cycle.

either way it goes cooling system maintence is key and solid advice to anyone who wants to keep their car maintained especially with Dex cool. |
