The Oldsmobile Connection

Howdy:

As I've posted elsewhere, spouse and I have some plans to spiff-up the finish on my 89 Cutlass Ciera. Couple of questions:

1. The guy I bought the car from said his dad (who literally bought it off the truck at a new car show) was told the finish would never need waxing. Of course, that's obviously not the case now, but has anybody else around here heard of that? And if so, is there some kind of special wax I need to use for it or would something like Nu Vinyl do the trick?

2. I'm missing the Oldsmobile badge that is supposed to go over the left headlight. Anybody know where I can get one?

I'm sure and wax will do
NuFinish car wax has a lot of cleaners in it that could be good if the paint hasn't been touched im a while.

Not for paint. As the name applies, it's sold as a vinyl preservative. I've used it, and would not recommend it to anyone.

Paint cleaners = rubbing compounds = abrasives = paint removal.

I wouldnt touch my car with any of that stuff. My clean/protect method is as follows.

Wash car throughly. dry.

I use meguires "quik clay" but any clar bar kit will work. use according to directions.

I follow this up with a good cleaner wax, mine is made by meguires.

I then follow that up with Meguires gold class pure carnuba wax, although any premuim wax will work. Alot of people use good ol turtle wax, and there is nothing wrong with that. I think, and it could be placebo, that a premium wax gives a better shine. Sort of a get what you pay for deal. I know Mothers makes a good wax, and the new Turtle wax stuff is good too. Zymol is probably the best out there, but too expensive for my blood. Also, I have a random orbital buffer that works great, otherwise its alot of elbow grease.

The second step is probably redundant, but I feel that it enures I am protecting a clean surface, and not waxing impurities into my paint.

Car Craft had a good article a couple months ago about bringing back faded finishes. Its still on their tech site IIRC.

Good start. If the wax is still good, you should be able to use clear water.

Not needed if the previous wax was done properly, the present session is not overdue, and your initial wash was complete.

Didn't you "clean" it during step one? Don't you "wax" it in step four?

Wax is good. Normally it should be the second (and final) step.

Turtle Wax worked last time I used it. Bue Coral did the same.

Im not sure if the "3 step process" I use is actually working better or not. In fact, I would believe that you are correct. However, comparing wax to wax, I think that the gold class wax I use gives a 'deeper' shine than the turtle wax does. Not sure if it makes a difference from clearcoat to conventional paint, but I did notice it looked 'deeper' than the cheaper stuff I had been using.

Im sure placebo had some sort of input here too, but I also believe that it actually was better.

I should have spelled it "Camaro Craft".

The last time I used Turtle Wax, Meguiar's gold class did not exist.

Checked out Camaro Craft, and didn't see anything about wax, or Camaros. I did look here, and saw this:

Hmm!..ya think he got the point?..anyways if someone was trying to obtain some badges/decals for their vehicle they would go to their local automotive salvage yard...Im sure they would have a bin of them!

Unless a local yard doesnt exist, or the person would rather not go to the salvage yard.

Or maybe they wanted NOS ones, which are some of those links. They are also different. 2 are chrome and black one is gold and black, and one is used.

Here is one of the !!QUESTIONS ASKED!!..I gave my answer that I thought was helpful! Sorry that I never broke it down into little quotes and asked a bunch questions about them. Some ppl like giving an opinion on something! without getting hassled about it. I would like to speak for others but i cant. Why? Because I don't know how they feel on the subject

In this context, the use of the word "analyzing" seems to indicate a bit of paranoia on the part of the author.

It is called a discussion. It is what is normally done on this discussion board.

Meaning that in some instances, ebay is the best way. Espically for dicussion purposes, becuase one can link to it, for easy reference.

A salvage yard is a great idea if he has access to it. That was my point, nothing more, nothing less.
