Got a few questions about my speaker installation in my '87.
Right now I have two JBL 3.5" dash speakers, two Pioneer 4-way 6x9's in the rear and will also be installing two 10" subs in the trunk (which I'm sure most have seen already).
I bought a JBL P80.2 amp to power the rear subs. I'd also like to use an amp for my rear 6x9's and will probably get another P80.2 amp.
Here's the new news though. I will be installing a 6.5" component, two 4" compenent, and a 1" tweeter in each door. The 6.5" component and 1" tweeter will have a crossover included with them.
So, how would my amp setup look like with these? Do I run a 4 channel amp for the 4" components and a 2 channel for the 6.5"/1" combo? I'm assuming I will have a total of 4 amps in the trunk. One for the subs, one for the 4" components, one for the 6.5"/1" components and one for the 6x9's. I don't plan on using an amp for the front dash speakers as I don't believe they really need one. Plus, after I install all of the other speakers, I may find that I don't need them.
Thanks for the help, |

Yea...you'd just run a 4-Channel amp for the 4" Speakers, and then a 2-Channel amp for the 6.5" Component Set. As you said before...you'd have a total of 4 amps. Recommend getting a wiring kit with 0 guage wire. That includes a distribution block that will split power to the 4 amps. Oh yea...I got that 5-Channel still for sale...that would make it only 3 amps. 5-channel running the 4" speakers and subs. And then amp for components and 6x9"s...

Okay, but if I ran the 4" speakers in parallel then I could get away with a 2ch amp correct?
I'm thinking about just buying three more of the JBL amps and using them. |

Yes...if you wired the 4" speakers in parallel, as long as they are 4 ohm each, it will present a 2 ohm load on each channel of the 2-channel amplifier. Make sure that each channel is 2 ohm stable too. Pretty sure the JBL is, so is my RF 5-Channel...if you used the RF then you would only need 2 amps... 8) :o

LOL, well I haven't got the money right now considering I just bought the door pods.
Oh, and I found out that its not two 4" speakers. Each pod holds one 4", one 6.5", one 1" tweeter, and one 5.25" speaker.
I'm really hoping these help round out the sound within the car and help it to sound my like my '98 Intrigue's sound system. Only with a little more bass and control over the music. |

for sure, thats gonna make it sound likely 2 times better than a stock system... :-) very nice!
hey 86delta, you wouldnt happen to have one of your past door pods for the deltas kicking around would you? I'd like to get components going in my car, and really dont want to make the pods from scratch, would you have one of your past designs for sale? ;-) |

| the only other door panel pods i had were for 2 5 1/4's in each door. they looked cool, but they weren't very good, didn't tilt the speakers up enough. they are pretty easy to make just takes a little thought and patience. i was thinking about making new ones to replace the ones i have now, i want to put the tweeter up higher, now my knee blocks the sound. |

| how did it sound with 2 51/4's in each door? I would think you'd have ample mid-bass with them... Interested in getting rid of them possibly? |

| they are kinda beat, and had a few design flaws. also i had to cut some metal out of the door so the magnets wouldn't hit. as far as the midbass goes they were pretty good, i had 2 sets of infinity kappa 5 1/4 components in them, but i have gotten better results from my single 6 1/2 set up. |
