Ok...
My car does this every once in a while...and I am wondering what it could be.
Every once in a while, the engine bay is squeaky, it comes specifically from the alternator/drive belt area....also, when this happens, there's quite a bit of exhaust coming out. What could this be? The belts check out just fine...they are not glazed, no cracks..nothing. Could a bad tensioner cause this? My brother said that's what it might be....

so... smoke? steam? I don't know how you would be able to tell that there is "more exhaust" if it's just the steam you get when you first start the car cold, it could just be because the steam from the tailpipe and the squeak under the hood are produced by the same conditions, and once it warms up they both go away. |

Well...since it's colder out....you can see the exhaust pretty good....and you can tell it puts out a lot more exhaust....you can be standing behind the car and a cloud of exhaust will form around you....it didn't used to do this....

 Hey B-dawg...are you sure you aren't INHALING those exhaust fumes??
Seriously, I have no clue why it would make a difference in the exhaust volume if the belt was squeaking/loose. I'd doubt the tensioner is the problem unless there is very little tension there, and even at that, it should squeak nearly all the time if thats the case...
Now, if you'd just quit starving all those mice under the hood, you wouldn't piss em off so they'd yell  |

I dunno...I guess I'll just do a little experimentation....

| Well I guess Ill take a shot in the dark, when my dad still had his 87 Grand Am, he had a loud squeek comming from the engine bay, can't remember if it made a difference with the idle or anything, but it went on for a few weeks until we took it to our mechanic. It was just the belt, its teeth had worn off so it was slipping. Changed the belt and it went away |

Yea...I know what you mean by that squeaky noise...that's pretty annoying...but this noise (well, it's annoying too) but it isn't as loud....although....when I started it up today and ran it for a while it didn't make the noise...so I dunno what the hell is up...my car is weird.

| Brando, it might be the beginning of a water pump failure. As to the increased volume of exhaust gases, I have no clue. Keep an eye out though for that water pump failure. |

| if you definately cant solve your intermittant belt squeaking, maybe its the bearing on your alternator? |
