Living in the great state of Minnesota, they like to dump salt all over our roads.

How difficult is fixing rust spots? Color matching paint? I gots a few small ones like on my gas tank and along the bottom of the body.

Hope the rust on the gas tank is just surface! That should be the easiest, just clean it off and re-paint with primer then undercoating. On the bottom of the body it should be a little harder but blemishes shouldn't show as much being down low. You have to remove ALL the rust or it will come back. If it is surface rust, you can remove it by hand sanding, it takes patience though. Be sure to feather the edges of the repaired area and use some primer first before applying the color paint. If those are small areas you can use the little bottles of paint that have a brush in the lid. For larger areas you might need to use spray cans. Tape off around the area to be painted after you have prepared it, make sure to clean the bare metal with denatured alcohol before paining. After you prime, then paint it there will be a line of demarkation when you remove the tape (use painters' masking tape) between the repair and original surrounding paint. This has to be rubbed out with rubbing compound to smooth the demarkation line out. with practise and time you should be able to do it. BE patient though......

Use a Dremel with the grey sanding bit to take the surface rust off. Run the Dremel at just 1,000 rpm (or lowest possible setting) to avoid wearing the sanding bit down prematurely because IT WILL wear down *really* fast at higher rpm's!! After you're done taking off the surface rust it's time to apply primer to the affected area(s) and I would recommend using a touch-up primer paint for this, preferrably Plasti-Kote over Duplicolor brand IMO. Then use the appropriate touch-up paint color after you have finished primering the surface. NOTE - This is for relatively small rust spots and for large affected areas you would probably have to use touch-up spray paint instead of the brush type. Hope some of this info helps! -JJ

I dunno why I said gas tank, I meant to say gas cap... hehe.

Most rust is surface and not very advanced, but I do have at least one spot below the drivers side door, just behind the front wheel where a 2"x2" hole has developed. Does some sort of fiberglass need to be used here?

You'll probably have to bondo up any holes if the rust has indeed eaten all the way through.

The proper way to fix a rust hole would be to weld in a patch panel. You do not want to use bondo for big holes.

And generally, if you have a hole that means there are probably a lot worse things behind it.

My '87 is being repaired right now for rust. I had a 3"x4" or so hole behind the passenger side rear wheel well. As my friend was cutting away to fix it he found that the entire inner wheel house was rusted away from the 1/4 panel and the only thing holding things together was the chrome trim.
But to look at from the outside it didn't look nearly that bad.
