Hi c_creations
Not good news:
There is no magic bolt on (except Nitrous Oxide). N2O can add large amounts of power, but is impractical in a lot of ways.
You have a heavy car and the 307 Olds engine was not designed to be a powerhouse.
Other than that a grand is not much unless you are prepared to do all labor yourself and not get sucked into buying stuff you don't need.
I don't know that much about your "B" body but the best ways to put power to the ground work on any car.
First, the most bang for the buck is a change to your rear end ratio. Choice of ratios is solely dependent on your individual driving conditions.
If you want to continue, let us know how you use your Olds.

| You want to go faster, swap a olds 350 or 403 in there. Its should be rather easy since all Olds small blocks have the same outter dimesions. a guy over at Oldspower.com name Chris in Tampa did this and his car rips |

Hi Psyco Diver 69, Hi c_creations, Hi all
Psyco: Appreciate your suggestion, but it'll require a lot more than his budget and after he changed engines he would still have to change gears. The idea is to make it go faster for less money. I think it's better to go with first things first. :)
c_creations: I'm thinking 3.42. With a 28" tire to provide more traction, it should be a great increase in acceleration, and a possible increase in around town gas milage.
3.91 would quicker, but start to become unpleasant on the highway, and you might see a small decrease in gas milage. Also might be harder to find.
In general, large hits in milage only come from big cams, which you don't need.
I will need some time to familiarize myself with your generation "B" body and the best way to do a gear change in it.
The more you can do yourself, the less it will cost and the sweeter the satisfaction in knowing you did it yourself.
I'll post back when I have real answers.

Hey Psyco:
Just noticed in your sig, 3.73 rear. I didn't know 3.73 came in Olds.
Is it a Ch*v rear end? Either way its a good gear. I thought Olds went from 3.42 to 3.91. '64 and earlier had a 3.64 that was a perfect street strip gear for the 324", 371", and 394" engines.

if you wanna spin your tires, do this:
go under your car and loosen the passenger side emergency brake line off quite a bit... Get back in, and put the Ebrake on, and without touching the brake at all (assuming your ebrake will hold you still), it should start spinning.
:-) Its red neck, I know, but its what I used to get the tires spinning on my 84 caprice 305... It was weak aswell... Oh, and flip your air cleaner lid upside down to see if it will make a difference in your case :-)
its a cheap mod, and if it doesnt do what you want it to, you just change it back... I cant imagine taking away 1/2 your emergency brake power is a smart thing. |

LOL.... yea, that is the most red neck line-lock I've ever heard of!
if you want to go THAT route, you could always drain the brake fluid from your rear brake system (I'm assuming you have a seperate system for the front and rear like most cars). That way only your front brakes will work. You'll be able to power brake it and smoke the tires all day! 8)
if that doesn't work... roll the car backwards down a hill really fast. then jam it into gear and floor it!
oh, and don't forget to kiss your transmission goodbye! :D |

| :-) Well, alternatively, you could rest the front bumper of the car against a brick wall, and slowly give it gas until either the wheels start spinning, or the wall gives way and you end up making a drive-thru for the occupants of the building... |

If you look really hard you could find a 350, 403, 455, etc in good running condition for well under $1000 and swap it in. I bought my 455 for $400 along with a TH400 trans (that I didn't use) and the guy fired the engine up for me. Idled smooth as silk.
I rebuilt it anyway but after tearing into it I found out that I wouldn't of had to. It still had some cross-hatching on the cylinders.
A stock, smogger 455 would absolutely out run any stock 307 and you wouldn't have any trouble lighting up the tire(s).
But probably the easiest thing to do would be to swap out your rear gears for something steeper. But I still doubt you'll get the performance your looking for.
I installed 3.73 gears in my '87 (when it still had the Y code 307) and after doing a good tune up and fixing the initial timing correctly I could get it to roast the tires by doing a brake stand. But it still would never light them up by just mashing the gas.
I'd do a basic tune up on the engine too just to make sure its where it should be. My 307 had the timing retarded 12* and at that setting could even do burn out while standing on the brakes. I set it to the proper 20* and gained back a lot of torque. But it was still slow. |
