spray the degreaser like crazy! wash it off, then go buy a bottle of simple green, and spray that on, let sit, wash off... Repeat until level of cleanliness desired is achieved.
Careful if you've got an open air filer or anything like that... cover it up if so. If you've got a distributor, and the car wont start afterwards, its wet inside...

You also dont want to start dumping cold water......I only say this because most hose water is cold.....on an engine that has been on for a while, my brother cracked his block doing that before!

If u spray cold water on an hot engine, condensation will form inside in some parts and u'll have water in ur oil, not good.

Don't be sorry, that's what this message board is for...along with chatting about our everyday lives in the Off-Topic Lounge, posting Time Slips, posting pics of your vehicle, looking at the calendar, (clicking on google ad to support TOC  ), keep track of things you want to do with your car with your personal to do list, looking at tech info for some cool ideas (need more tech, email me if you have a write-up to add), chatting in the chat room, looking at Top Internet Stories, checking out our sponsors, getting 40% plus free shipping on second skin sound deading products, 10% off of RSM Racing products, and a whole lot more I probably forgot :D

This reminds me of a story my brother told me the other day. He is a mechanic at a local dealership, and after they work on a car they get it detailed. Well the moron at the detailing shot decided to get the power washer as close to the new computer my brother installed, and fried it. Gotta love stupid people! Oh yea, he said this is the 3rd time they have done that

just dont wash it when the engine's warm... gotta start cutting the grease some time! At work, we have to degrease people's air compressors that come in for service. Now air compressors are something that people NEVER clean, and they have more built up grease in hidden places than any vehicle I've ever seen. I've found that this industrial degreaser works WONDERS on a dirty engine. Its called:

TEMP-ST - Its purple in color and is VERY potent. I dont know where you'd get this stuff in the states, but we buy it from a pressure washer distributor. It doesnt seem to attack plastics or dry them out, which is a problem with some industrial degreasers.

I just cleaned mine about a month ago, get a can or 2 of GUNK engine bright (has a orange cap) and spray it like crazy on the engine (watch the a/c, starter, etc) and let it site for 20-30 min. Hose off and take it around the block after letting it sit in the sun for 1/2 hr. Then do it again the next morning following the same directions. AFter that get some simple green and do the fire wall, etc. Dont get the degreser on the fire wall (to many wires in that area to wanna get wet). And soon you'll have the cleanest engine on the block.

I didnt but maybe you should ( as the people next door say i do half ass). I had a bad oil leak (fixed it after I cleaned it needed new valve cover gasket) so I had to use a lot if it. I was just real careful to watch that stuff (a/c, starter, fire wall, alt., battery, etc). Good luck, and use a old paint brush to spred the stuff around so that it takes the stuff off. Use the brush to work the cleaner into the grim, makes a big diff. GOOD LUCK

be careful with some of that simple green, i think it depends where you get it, my uncle was cleaning his engine and let some of that sit a little too long and it etched his intake manifold :|

dont let it sit too long whatever chemical you use, after all, they are chemicals.
