| when i got my car i was told by the guy i bought it from that it had sat for a few years and was hardly run. Just recently i had the water pump go so i replaced that. Right after i replaced it i ran some carb cleaner thru it ( the fuel additive kind) and the engine started ticking. Being the idiot i can be, i assumed it was the carb cleaner, or something that was rattling from the water pump job that caused the ticking. 3 tanks of gas and a tightening session later the ticking was still present. turns out that my oil was very low  . after adding oil it continues to tick.:x i took it to my mechanic and he told me it was a lifter, and added some lucas oil stabalizer. he told me to run it for a week, then change the oil and see if that cleared it up. its been about a week now, the ticking is still there i havnt changed the oil yet, (im waiting for the weekend). What else can i do to try to revive this lifter so i dont have to replace it? (ive already checked, i dont have adjustable rocker arms). |

What I usually do, is add about a 1/2 quart of automatic transmission fluid in with the engine oil. This acts as a cleaner, and will clean the dirt or buildup that is blocking oil flow to the hydraulic lifter. Run this in clean oil for 1500miles or so, and change the oil. I wouldnt run it too much longer than that, because the oil will be FILTHY black. This is because the ATF cleans crap out of the inside of the engine so well.
I did that for 3 oil changes straight in my car, and was still getting completely black oil after only about 1200 miles. I can imagine what the inside of my engine looked like before this... And there was only 60,000miles on it to begin with.
Try it out, ATF is definately cheap enough, and you dont have to risk damage to the engine. |

Hi all
Do not drive a car hard after diluting your oil with anything. It is best not to drive it at all and to let it idle at normal operating temp. Most additives and particularly these type of thinners are very hard on the bottom end as they lack the lubricating qualities of your regular oil.
