True duals, or dual outlet? For dual outlet, do what I did on my car, there SHOULD be enough room under there to do the piping. It sounds good on my car, and looks great too. Cheaper by a lot than designing a true dual exhaust system.

Due to the transversly mounted engine, it will be very difficult to run true dual exaust. I put Z34 exaust (which is dual outlet) on my lumina, but you would get by cheaper getting a dual outlet muffler and fabbing your own.

Like a V8, duals on a V6 won't sound any different than a single. Since the banks are separate and use two manifolds, you'll hear the same two 3 cyl engines, either way. The sound doesn't change when the two headpipes merge into one, just as it doesn't change when it splits into two outlets.

The different volumes/tones come from different pipe configurations and/or mufflers.

Split manifold will make an I6 sound like a V6 because the split turns it into two manifolds.

180º headers on a V8 will make it sound a lot like a cross bewteen a I6 and a V10, but that's for another thread.

Regards, Norm

What about duals and headers on a 83 3.8L Cutlass? I can find hedman headers that will fit, but can't find dual exhaust. Has anyone had any experience getting custom duals...if so how expensive was it? Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean000

When I had the dual exhaust run on my truck it was about 200 bucks from the manifold to the tip. The problem you will run into is that the crossmember on that car has only one cutout for an exhaust pipe. You will either need to remove and modify the crossmember, or buy an aftermarket crossmember that already has the provision.

If you live in a state with emmissions testing, then you will need 2 cats too.

IIRC, the 80's 442 exhaust is dual outlet, so you get the look, without the hassle.

It won't sound any different than a 'true dual', it will be cheaper, and it will be eaiser.

Im sure you can buy a kit, but I will bet the price of having it done in a shop will be more attractive the cost of the kit.

The operator of your local muffler shop will know exactly what can and cannot be done, legally and practically.

He can also advise you about all possible options, and what each will cost.

In CA, that configuration, as with any "non approved" modification, would be illegal.

California has a very strict emissions policy...more so than alot of states that have those policies. How severe are Minnesota's emissions policies?

I dunno, but how strict are Canadas? Thats where he is from...

Here in Iowa there is no such thing as emmisions testing. If it will go down the road, then its legal!

I only said Minnesota because the thread was started by someone from there..Canada's emissions vary region to region..based on the population size in specific areas, as well as how "new" the car is!...It's done every two years..I can't see how 2 cats(which are a good thing for the environment) can be "illegal", as opposed to 1 cat!....Wouldn't that kinda be an "Oxymoron"?

sorry thats how I took it!

We have, in the past.

That would be why I advised him to check his local laws, and suggested the easiest place to do so.

It has already been discussed in the recent past. You can find it here.

No.

You have not apologized once for your numerous verbal attacks, but you just apologized for no reason.

Now, that is funny.
