Hey guys, i just purchased a 95 cutlass ciera SL two days ago, and the thing is a beauty. 150,000 miles, paints looks really good *except* there are a few spots of rust on it. What do you guys use to touch up the rust? spray paint is what my dad told me, but im sort of afraid to use spraypaint. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

dont paint over rust, it will only rust through.

if its surface rust, some CLR
(Calcium, Lime, Rust remover.. you can find it at just about any hardware store)
and some fine grit sandpaper are some easy ways of removing it.

but if its real deep rust, like rotted through you should have a reputable shop cut out and replace the metal for you. This option can get expensive.

If thats out the option, theres always bondo.. i've never messed with the stuff as my car wasnt rotted through, and it has a reputation for not actually fixing the problem.

make sure the surface is smooth and use primer before spraying any paint.

no, the rust is not deep at all, it is just some minor surface rust. So CLR and fine grit sandpaper work well? thank you so much

sand blasting is the only way to remove rust, and no bondo is not meant to stop rust if the rust is not repaired correctly putting bondo over it will make it come back faster

the cheaper way with out spending allot of money to refinish panels
POR 15 it stops rust in it`s tracks!!! clean the metal, apply POR 15 done and it`s paintable
rust has to be removed for it to stop completely

CLR and some sand paper... Don't know what ever made you think that. I don't even think that would even be effective?

Anyways, sandblasting or POR15 will work. We had some stuff called 1Step we used on my Delta in some spots that were hidden, not reccomended. It was supposed to stop rust once you sanded it down. Sadly that rust is slowly coming back.

Depends how you define "surface rust".

On toilets, very effective. Not sure on cars.
