What is the best way to get a near showroom-quality shine for your car?
My car's finish looks like there's ground-in dirt in it (I know for a fact that the car's previous owner NEVER washed the thing!!!) I've tried compounding the finish, but it doesn't look right to me; it simply doesn't shine enough. Is there some sort of special cleaner/wax/compound I can use to make the paint look better? Or is there some sort of procedure I should use?

Bring it to a reputable body shop, after a quick look at it they will probably be able to tell you the best course of action to take. It may be able to be brought back with buffing, or it may be weathered so far that it needs a new coat of paint to obtain a "showroom shine." Someone with some knowledge on the subject needs to see it in person to make that judgement.
