Hello all. I have been to other Oldsmobile forums with no luck. A lot of viewings, no answers and frustration to follow. Looks as if inquiries here are actually replied to.

Avid DIY'r, what other way is there to learn? Help out where I can.

Hello Fellow Oldsters,
Just joined today after replacing the upper plenum/throttle body gasket set for the second time. Can anyone say if this is a semi-annual repair? Looks to be a design flaw is this 3800 II engine. Otherwise, I've become strangely attached to this vehicle.

Welcome all, I think you'll find this place small but very helpful.

Elad, as far as the Olds 88 and the issues you have had are common but I have never heard of anyone having the issue again after the repair was made. Others on the board may have more knowledge of the issue if you start a thread and ask.

Hey, thanks for your comment. Good suggestion about the thread. By the way, I'm a former CT resident. Used to live in Cheshire. Still visit family there every summer. Regards.

it is a very common problem in the 3800 series 2, there are ways around it, Which alot of people do and have no ill effects by bypassing it all together and plug th LIM where it meets the UIM, But i strongly encourage you to see for youreself first, http://www.3800pro.com/forum/supercharg ... sc-tb.html

91Parkave;
Very interesting pics, thanks again. My only worry might be that the example you offered involved a supercharged/turbo engine. However, if my coolant leak repeats, I'm plugging it regardless.

Elad: As stated above, I suggest you start a new thread in the proper forum.

Not often you see an "authority" cite his own post, on another site, as a source.

The hot coolant, mixed with the EGR warps the intake enough to allow coolant through the gasket, and starts slowly to enter the Air intake, causing more problems, it is a knwn design flaw as i stated before. IF you doubt me you can always look it up youreself. plugging the Holes in the LIM are ways to cure this obviously because the coolant never sees the UIM or TB.

To the op it is the same for yours as well. I will find some morre time to dig up some more threads on your problem and what was done to fix it. but i supplied that link to give you an option t o alleviate the problem.

I'd consider blocking the coolant passages as a last resort, especially since you live in an area that actually needs the coolant going through the throttle body.

A better fix may be to have the surfaces of both the intake and the throttle body "trued up" so that a gasket will seal them better.

Since the car sees cold weather, you'll be better off fixing it right than just "alleviating" the problem.

i disagree my car still warms up in the same amount of time, and even when its been right at 0 degrees my TB has never "iced" over I cant think of many of at all times, a TB has iced over to merit the use of having coolant run through it.

I didn't know it got that cold in Georgia.

Here in the Midwest, we've had weeks where it's been -20F to -40F, actual temperature.

The coolant passages are there for a reason. It helps the car warm up, and will help fuel atomization in cold winter temperatures.

I could not find anything either.

You have "stated" a lot of things since your arrival. Few of your statements have had anything to do with reality.

91buickman wrote:

    1. The link has nothing to do with the "problem".
    2. The OP has not yet defined the "problem".

Here is one that tells how to do it.

http://www.3800pro.com/forum/naturally- ... 6df8460a54

But it doesn't say why.

It it is wonder that it warms up, at all.

Yuma, AZ? Hot?

Debate? For your climate? Yuma, AZ? How does the weather in Yuma, AZ compare with Milwaukee, WI?

What does any of it, have to do with a gasket failure?

andrewk wrote:

Makes perfect sense if the gasket is the only problem.

We should be able to get it clarified when the new thread is started.
