Americans had much different agendas in the past... They had lots of space, big roads and low fuel prices. They built cars to occupy those large roads, took advantage of the cheap fuel and made them comfy as hell!

Japanese on the other hand, have very little space in thier country, small, intricate roads and had much higher operating costs than america. They built cars to accomodate their needs, and, consequently, they ended up building cars that the world accepted because of the low operating costs, and tiny size with excellent handling and manoverability. But they just arent comfy.

Different cars satisfy different needs for different people ;-)

Hello everyone,

Ones choice of a car, is an individual decision based on personal needs and circumstances. Mine are different than most.

The way any individual personalizes his ride is up to him/her and is none of my business.

I do not bash anyones ride. I will, however, respond honestly if the owner asks my opinion.

I do not understand the front drive mentality at all.

For about 42K miles I owned a '72 Toyota Corona MK II with a 215" Olds V8 and Muncie 4 speed.
First 137K, it was a 137" inline 6 cyl with 4 spd and rear drive, so I do understand what a riceburner is all about.

Regards, Norm

Hi 88delta88, All,

Quote:
........ That thing must have MOVED!

Because it was a V8 with turbo mufflers, the sound impressed everyone.

Toyota was about the same weight (3000#) as an F85, and it ran about the same as a '63 Cutlass 4 speed.

I did the original conversion with a 215 Buick, the Olds was a little quicker due to it's superior head design. Used the same headers on both.

Didn't intend a thread hijack.

Regards, Norm

I have to admit, japenese engines are very efficient. Usually when comparing engines of same size, the japenese one will have more horsepower, and better fuel economy. One reason would be the transmission for fuel economy, GM keeps slapping on the 4 speed hydramatic tranny on everything, i think thats hurting them everyone wants efficient cars with the gas prices. Also 4 valves per cylinder makes more power and makes it more efficient, i believe almost all honda motors have 4 valves per cylinder, yet GM keeps slaping on 2 valves per cylinder, maybe for the torque?? It is a phase and one day there will be tons and tons of modded imports for sale.

You see people racing with 1.6L's and you wonder why, well from factory they come built very efficient.

GM's 3800 series engine is making 205HP and 230ft-lbs
Nissans 3.5L in the Maxima is making 265HP and 255ft-lbs

How? Overhead valves compared to DOHC

Fuel economy numbers are the same except the 3800 in the park avenue has 1mpg more, if GM would slap a 5 speed auto or a 6 speed auto they could raise the highway efficency alot higher.

You cant compare a car of 1985 and 2000 so much technical improvement, compare ur olds to and 85 civic something more comparable.

GM is fineally coming to its senses..

"GM says the six-speeds offer better fuel economy and performance and smoother shifting than traditional four-speeds. They also cut down on wear by reducing engine revolutions per minute."

I'll start off by saying that I've never owned any cars that aren't american, for that matter I've never owned any cars that aren't oldsmobile... but I feel that many japanese cars are built very well and yes some are even sports cars...my best friend's mom owns a Honda 2000 and the thing is QUICK!

The problem, (which I think was the point of this thread) are the 500,000+ high school kids with civics that think they are 10 second 1/4 mile cars WHICH THEY ARE NOT!!!!!!!!
