Well, we finally got around to dropping my car off to get the salvaged inspection paper-work filled out and the car itself-inspected; did this Wednesday. Well we had some problems. Appears my worst worries, tires and brakes were not an issue. However, it appears I have 2 broken motor-mounts (Explains the jerking while shifting and really shaky idle), a CV-joint spitting grease, and the alternator bearing are shot (I knew that one). Well, the garage said they were going to pass it (The advantages of knowing the mechanics). Picked the car up last night to find no sticker, and no paper-work filled out. Me and my mom (She’s paying for half the stuff) were pissed all night and were debating taking tags off the car and my stereo shit out and just letting the car there with no title. So this morning my mom’s car was dropped off and such. Mechanic called my mom at work saying her oil change was done and shit. Also appears they filled out my paper-work. However we were mis-lead, they are not giving me my sticker till after we send in the paper-work to Harrisburg (Main DMV/Penn-Dot Centre). Jesus, this is all too confusing!

That sucks that they're giving you the run around, but at least it sounds like it'll work out...

Quite a bit of stuff...but it's pretty common stuff. Luckily these deltas aren't too hard to work on. My intrigue with the 3.5, you need to take the radiator out to get to the alternator. Have fun...

Hi 87Delta, all,
I think thats the part number... An alternator will produce the same voltage/ampreage at idle as it would when you are on the throttle. It will vary some depending on the electrical load the car experiences, but overall it will remain the same.

Huh? No, the faster the alternator turns, the more current it puts out (to a limit of course).
The alternator I got for my delta is 200 amps, 85-95 amps at idle. It very well could be the amperage....200 amp was the highest Motor City Reman had. I looked around and it isn't an AC Delco part number.

Could of been, they mainly do big truck alts and stuff so it might be the standard. There isn't a part number since they re-built my existing alternator. I might get a meter to see what it actually does. If it is the amperage... hello big sound system.
Also, either I'm crazy... but it seems the car ran a little bit better with the new/rebuild alternator? Was the old one not sufficiant enough? Hell the lights would dim @ 50 MPH with an amp with 150 watts RMS. Think I'm going nuts.

But once the regulator is 'excited' the alternator will produce what the load requires. Amperage may change, but voltage should vary more than half a volt or so. Do you agree?

If the load is too great for the alternator in its current state, say at idle...it will not adjust engine speed to compensate. High power sound systems, you will see huge voltage drops if the electrical system isn't up to the task (headlights dimming). Granted there are various upgrades such as upgrading the charging wire, installing a bigger and/or second battery, but the alternator is the main power house. The only way the alternator can provide more power is if the engine is throttled up to turn the alt faster.
Although, I will agree with your statement partially, as that does apply to stock alternators in a fully stock electrical system. They are designed to give it their all (or most of it) at the engines idle speed. Higher output alternators on the other hand have the advantage of more current at higher rpms, losing a little or a lot at idle. I recently read somewhere, changing to a high output alternator is a lot like changing to a more aggressive camshaft.

At what RPM does it start producing 200 amps?
