I tried a small dab and I saw my paint was coming off on the rag. Suffice to say, I put it away and just got a generic brand car wax.

I don't think I'll ever use any type of teflon particle car wax again. I have a suspicion that this type of wax does more damage than good to a car's paint.

Have any of you had this kind of experience before?

Are you sure it was paint, or was it just dirt? I know you washed the car before you tried the wax, but sometimes that doesn't always take off the built on dirt. I know a few cars that it seemed that way.

Don't think I would use a teflon based wax myself, I use some Maguires wax and it does great. I usually do a wax in the spring (well the Delta was an exception, couldn't wax it cause the paint was still breathing...) and in the fall.

Adam,

I swear, it was blue, just like the color of my paint. It had an abrasive quality to it like rubbing compound.

WTF? What brand and line was this wax? Sounds more like a polishing compound for chrome and aluminum..

It's called, "Perma Shield." It was given to me as a free gift. It may have some good uses for other applications, but definitely not my car.

Hi MysterHK, hello everyone,

Quote:

That's exactly what polish is supposed to do. What you have, is a "one step" polish/wax compound. They don't do either very well.

Here's a partial quote from meguiars.com: ........ As in polishing a diamond, the sole purpose of polishing is to create brilliant high gloss. ....... Waxing a car falls under the larger heading of protecting the paint finish from the elements by coating it with waxes, polymers, resins and silicones. .......

Regards, Norm

Good post Norm.

One other thing to add... If you have a dirty car, or oxidized paint, even a straight wax will come off with color on the rag. Its not because the wax is abrasive, its the rubbing of the rag on loose paint molecules.

Your car should have a clear coat. There should be no paint coming off on the rag... should there? If your clear coat is somewhat faded, or very thin, its a possibility that you are actually polishing the paint underneath the clear coat.

If you have had the car painted since, then it may be a one step paint, with no clear coat, and you have nothing to worry about. Personally, I love the Meguiars Gold class wax, it doesnt last very long, but it shines better than anything else I have tried. Also turtle wax extreme shine works well.

If the paint hasn't been waxed or washed in a while and you use a cleaning wax, you will get some paint off. Friend had an Acura do that today. Shined up great though. No ill effects.
