my gain is always up there, i just dont use the bass boost, if you keep a clean signal, and you have a good amp with lots of power why would you want it at half gain, I always keep my signal clean and jack it to like 80%
and i hits so hard. actually come to think of it, I've never kept my gain on any of my amps at or below half gain , except my 4 channels.

The gain IS NOT a volume control, it is used to simply match the output voltage of the head unit's pre-out voltage.

I know how to set it, but if you just match the gain, you dont get all the good output you can, im not happy with it just set at the right gain, it sounds weak, so u crank it up a bit +30% and it pounds.. which would you rather?
