Has anyone had any experience with those (i think they're called) bass cups? They are plastic cups you fasten to the back of your 6x9's and they create a sort of sealed enclosure for your 6x9's. I'm wondering if they actually do anything, because maybe that would be a good idea for my car... Since there is nothing on the back of my speakers in the rear. I have JVC 6x9's, and they dont sound anywhere near how they sound in my buddy's car with the same speaker. His sound much more full, rich sound, the only difference is he uses those pre-fab 6x9 MDF enclosures.

Any thoughts on the matter?

I would suppose you would get a little better bass response, possibly even handle more watts since it would be in a small non-free air enclosure, that is if these bass cup things seal right to the speaker and don't have any air leaks. Might be better off building or buying some MDF 6x9 Enclosures, sturdier and you would probably get better bass response from a real enclosure than those bass cups if they are the same thing I am thinking of...

the bass cups are used moreso to keep moisture away from the speakers in the even they're mounted in the doors, or say, a trunk that tends to get damp. They do help a bit with the sound quality, as they tend to enclose the back of the speakers, but not by a great deal. If nothing else, go buy yourself a pair of the 6x9 boxes and fasten em to the underneath of your rear deck, using some clear silicone or caulk to seal em to the bottom of the deck, then put your speakers in from the top( if possible). This way, you create a sealed enclosure with a better size than using the cups, which tend to be on the small side. You could also bolt the speakers in the boxes, then fasten em to the underside of the rear deck, but would most likely need to make some kind of spacer to go between the boxes and deck, as the speakers will sit above the level of the front of the boxes. Also, is his car similar to yours? Same power running to the speakers? There can be other issues that make the speakers sound different than just the fact that they sound better in his car than yours, even though they're the same speakers...

That is a very good idea stroker... I think i've seen those MDF 6x9 boxes at the surplus store in town... Might be worth a look! I bet that would sound a hell of a lot better! I'm going to give it a shot!
