My brother has a 2000 Alero with stock stereo and speakers. The speakers are making a cracking noise at low volume. When turned up to a normal volume the noise drowns out the music. That's with the bass turned the whole way down. When the bass is turned up all the speakers cut out and won't come back on till the stereo is turned off then back on. I think the stereo is the problem but I thought I'd ask here to see what you guys think before my brother spends any money.

are your stock speakers equipped with a crossover? in other words, is the tweeter seperate from the midrange speaker? I had this same problem in my jeep...
Yes, some crossovers have tweeter protection circuits (a fuse to protect the tweeter from blowing out), but that only shuts the tweeter off, not the woofer. I don't think the alero comes stock with a front component set like the intrigue (my stock tweeters only had a capacitor soldered to the positive wire-simple 6db/octave crossover). Besides the point...all the speakers wouldn't shut off like he said.
It's either the external amp (if it is bose, usually mounted on the rear deck, can be seen in the trunk) or the stereo/head unit amp. The amp is going into protect (whether it be external or internal is what needs to be answered).
The stereo says Bose on it if it is a Bose system.
The system is not a bose and there isn't any amps on the rear deck. The tweeter's are seprate they're in the piller next to the windshield while the speakers are in the door.
So it sounds like he will need to get a new stereo.
