a 3800 was an optional engine in 88, standard in 89. they fixed the rough idle with a balance shaft.

I have a 76 Olds Engine in my 78 Olds Cutlass,w/Q-Jet 4 bl.,K & N,Th-350 w/ B & M shift kit,glass paks,dropped 1.5" front-1" back,PST complete front poly suspension rebuild,KYB shocks,stock Rally wheels

Here are the main features new for the Series I 3800 according to firebirdv6.com:

Low-drag piston rings, digital exhaust gas recirculation, direct-impingement fuel-injection targeting, and a quick-start ignition were added in 1988. A new counter-rotating balance shaft eliminated the second-order rocking couple inherent to all V-6 engines.
