Well... Yesterday I was driving to a park we often visit, and the ploughed section of road ran out. I normally wouldnt have continued in a FWD but the road looked completely flat, and no worse than just an inch of fresh snow on the road. I was going about 70km/h and as soon as I hit the "fresh snow", the car started going squirley. I knew at that point it was more like 6 inches deep, with horrible drifts! I tried to put on the brakes, but it sucked me into the ditch, and high-centered me.
Anyways... I called a tow truck, and it took him about an hour and a half to arrive. I didnt even try to dig myself out, it would have made me cold, wet, and I knew I wouldnt get anywhere by myself. The tow truck made it about 3/4 of the way to where I was, and got stuck himself. He played around for at least 1/2 hour and finally called in backup...

Another tow truck came to winch him out, but they still couldnt get to me... I left the car overnight.
This morning, I visited it, and it was drifted completely in, only showing what was above the bumpers! There were also 2 more vehicles abandoned since I was there... It was a funny scene. Wish I had my camera. Everyone I talked to said I'd have to wait until the road was ploughed before I could get the car... So I called city infrastructure (This happened on a city street BTW) and was transferred 4 times, before I talked to the "snow-removal co-ordinator". I explained my sob story to him and he felt my pain. He told me to meet him in 45 minutes at my car, he would bring the grader and a front end loader!!!
So I got to watch a full sized CAT front end loader with a bucket big enough to swallow a minivan dig my car out of the snowbank. He was a hell of a driver too, coming within a couple inches of my car with the bucket. Tense few seconds, but after that, I was winched out of the ditch and all is well again...
Talk about the city actually coming to my rescue for once!!! All I ever hear about is how horrible of a job they are doing. I must disagree, this was amazing! Having a grader, front end loader and city workers all come out just to dig me and my 1988 oldsmobile out of a snowbank! And all in less than an hour!
