Im thinking of getting my car a new friend, another Olds that is. There is a tanish 1985 Nintey-Eight Regency coupe not far from me that hasnt moved in about 2 years. Its got a 3.8liter V6, 4 speed over drive automatic, power winows, power seat, am/fm/cassette, wire hubcaps, a/c, lots of other stuff and 123,000 miles. The body is in overall good shape with it needing a new back bumper (rusted out) and minor rust on a back fender. The interior is ok with some rips etc but over all presentable for 20 years old. I havent even found the owner yet but am wondering if I could get this thing going again. Is there anything maybe I should know before I get myself into this?

You mean a Ninety Eight Regency, not Royale, right? No such thing as a 98 Royale...unless it's some sort of hybrid...

Doesn't sound to good to me....especially if it's been sitting in the same place for 2 years.

There was a Delta Eighty-Eight Royale in 85, i dont think there was a royale for the Ninety Eight

Its also a RWD so the engine is different than LN3, 110HP 190ft-lbs

Yeah its a Regency put that on accident last night when i was sleepy, the car was parked becasue the owner got sick and couldnt drive it. It is currently registered and doesnt appear to leak anything. This 98 is front wheel drive(1st year for it) the vin says it is a 1985 98 Regency coupe with the 3.8 liter fuel injected V6 (125hp).

Ok the ninety eight Regency is FWD and the 3.8L Fuel Injected engine is different, minor changes im guessing than the 3.8L fuel injected engine in the ciera. The one in Regency still has 110HP different intake design is the most visually different apprence.

The 3.8Ls in cieras always had more the the 3.8Ls in Ninety Eigths

1988 Ninety Eigth 3.8L 150HP@4400rpm 200ft-lbs@2000rpm

1985 Cutlass Ciera 3.8L 125HP@4400rpm 195ft-lbs@2000rpm
1985 Ninety Eigth 3.8L 110HP@3800rpm 190ft-lbs@1600rpm

There actually seems to be lots of differences between the
88 Ciera 3.8L
88Ciera_SC
http://www.oldsconnection.com/forum/alb ... ?pic_id=99

and the

88 Ninety Eigth 3.8L
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/530615/3

The 3.8L in the Ninety Eight and the Eigthy Eigth are quite different
different intake manifold and TB?

From what i can see the intake setup is different, (MAF on Eigthy Eight is alot smaller)

Battery on opposite side
No Dogbone
Master Cylinder Different
Coolant/ Washer fluid resevoirs different

Im not sure about anything else.

Correction, "the 3.8L in the Ninety Eight and the Canadian Eighty Eight are quite different"
The USA version of the Eighty Eight uses the same engine as the Ninety Eight:

That idiot painted his rotors.....

*EDIT* Huh...and he appears to be registered here....

my engine is the VIN code 3 version... there was an option for the VIN code C engine, which is the 3800... with all those plastic intake covers and different style MAF sensor.

Brando, what is the difference between the american 88's and canadian 88's? (besides the speedo and odometer...) :-)

Ah, I see...I thought it was because it was made in Canada, but was in fact an "option" to have the newer VIN C engine.
