greetings all from the newbie

i've managed to decode some of the info off the body plate of my farmer's field find...

body plate is as follows:
'general motors of canada'
'made in canada'
model 36-69D
serial 2366900990
engine CC13102
trim 477
body serial 813
paint 250

so from the serial i know its a 2=52 3=olds series 6 = ???? 69=4 door body style and the 00990 is the sequential serial number.

what i need to know is what model is it - is it a rocket/super rocket or ???
engine code info - the engine is long gone, can i use the engine info to track it down or replace it with what would have been sitting in there originally ? most of the trim is in great shape, i am missing a rear bumper though.

this must have been a beauty when it was new - i can't wait to restore it

All V-8 Oldsmobile engines manufactured after 1949 were called "rockets". There is no regular or super version of the engine, rocket is simply a marketing term that was coined. So yes, it's a "rocket", but so are all the other ones.

Hope this helps, and welcome to TOC

Is that from a Canadian source?

Sounds like that serial number might be the body number. Maybe? I know my '46 has a body number tag on the firewall that has a number that is not the same as the number that is supposed to be on the driver's side A pillar (which is missing on my car).

Is that what you were thinking about Norm? Maybe in Canada the number was organized differently?

It is.

Using the given information:

1) Model 36-69D = I show a year and style# (2 or 52?) 3669D = Super88 Deluxe 4 Dr Sedan.

2) Serial 23669 (2 3669 looks like the year and style#s) 00990. = Body# (no relation to the VIN or engine #) should begin with 1 or 2 letters that ID the assembly plant.

3) Engine CC13102 = Should be Rxxxxx

4) Trim 477 = I don't have it. Should be in the Fisher Body Manual,

5) Body serial 813 = No idea, it's too short to be a serial#.

6) Paint 250 = I only see two digits.

Looks like it.

oldsgrl: If you can, enter the VIN here.

thanks for the replies folks

i have a pic of the tag from the firewall but i can't upload it to photobucket cause i'm on dialup and it keeps timing out on me :(. i can email it if someone could post it for me that might help.

haven't been able to locate the VIN - i'm not actually home right now to examine the car - which is still in the field where i found it. rumor has surfaced there may be an old ford in another field a few acres over, i can't wait to scope that out. apparently the olds engine may have been located in the farmer's barn - i'm heading there tomorrow to investigate.

the source i used to decode the serial number is canadian - www.canadianclassiccars.com . i scrolled through a ton of other decodes and managed to piece mine together pretty well ( i think i did okay).

the tag has the body serial listed simply as 813. i'm not sure how many plants in canada were making the olds back in 52 - i'm going to guess only one which would explain the lack of a plant code (maybe?)

dumb newbie question - what's a fisher body manual ??( is that something like the many haynes manuals in my garage ?)

thanks to all. here's hoping there are no surprises when we move the car on the weekend - its been sitting in the elements for years, lord knows what'll happen when we lift it onto a flatbed. cross your fingers for me.

go ahead and email that pic to bmaierleNOSPAM@gmail.com

remove the NOSPAM part from the address.

Here's a little info about fisher body:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_Body

I don't know if you've heard of a factory service manual, but they cover everything mechanical/electrical/chassis. The body manual covers everything...well...on the body and it's accessories.

A hayne's manual is basically an extremely shortened factory service manual, often losing lots of information in the process.

Same numbers I referenced before. I already posted the US equivalents.

Next step is to call or write:
