Does anyone know where I can find the trim that runs the front to back, door ding strip. Want to have it repainted and the strips are rotten. AndyImage

HI Andy 75,

Welcome to TOC.

I recognize your pic from another site.

The trim is not original. It was an aftermarket "add on" that was either glued on by a "lot boy" at the dealer, or purchased/installed elsewhere.

Win-win situation: There are no holes to fill, and you will be returning it to its original condition.

Thank you so much for the information. You are right I love all the forums. I could never figure it out. I went with my partents to pick it up new. The wheel covers and side moulding were on it at the time. My parents were to thrifty to add anthing that didn't come on it. Why would the dealer put such ugly wheel covers and side moulding free. I wanted to keep it as close to original as possible, great news the door moulding can go in the trash. and I can find some original type wheels. Again thank you so much. Andy

They weren't free. They would have been listed, on the window sticker, as "dealer installed" options.

Both were among the most popular "accessories" in that era, and would have been added to make the car more visually appealing, to perspective buyers.

Thank you 88 . One other question if you have time. What is your expert opinion.. Try and replace the door trim and have the wheel covers re done, or go for the plane look with other wheels.. Would really like your in put. Andy

In that day, the margins, on the "basic" vehicles, wasn't much, and the actual profit came from the sale of any "extras" they could sell.

Need I say more?

My "expert opinion" on someone else's personal tastes?

Quote:

If you like the look, and can find replacements, do it.

Its primary purpose was to "protect" the paint, from opening doors, in parking lots.

The "look" would have appealed to those who where looking for a "cheap" bolt on. Sort of like a "ricer" looks for a wing, fart can, or neons.

Again, a matter of personal taste. If you like the look, do it.

But first, you might want to check into the cost.

Wire wheel covers were an inexpensive (refer back to my comment about "ricers") substitute for wire wheels. They, like wheel covers and, unlike hubcaps, had a reputation for making "creaking" sounds and/or falling off, on the highways.

Wheel covers were (and are) also an option, as they were the most popular, and are still easy to find.

Hubcaps were relatively rare then, and more rare now.
