I have a 1952 Olds Ninety Eight Rocket V-8 and I would like to know how many cubic inches the motor is and if it is 12 volts or 6 volts. I also have a 1942 with a hydromatic transmission that I think I would like to restore. Need to know approximately what the cars are worth. They are all in originial condition, but do not run. I do not want to spend more money to restore them than they are worth. Please help! Thanks!

From the factory, both cars would have been 6 volt, positive ground. There should be an ID plate on the Generator that tells you what the output is. If it says 12v, you know that it's been changed at some point.

Worth is relative to body, interior, and overall condition.

"98" would have had a 303 cubic inch V8, with a 4 barrel carb, rated at 160 HP and 283 Ft Lbs.

FSM (Factory Service Manual) is an invaluable source of information.


6 volts. '53 was the first year for 12 volt systems.

GM used negative ground, while Ford and Chrysler were positive ground. Everything else in andrewk's post, is correct.


Spelling is "Hydra-Matic" with an "A". Very common mistake, as the abbreviation "Hydro" was used "back in the day".


Personally, I do not see $$$$ when I look at a car. I enjoy it for what it is.


By "worth" do you mean, that, your goal is turn a profit on your "investment"? If so, CD's will usually yield a higher return, while shielding you from the inevitable losses.

Ask here, for a more complete (if not, more accurate) explanation.
