What is the purpose of the hump going down the center of Olds Intrigues that looks like a drive shaft tunnel? I'm looking into making my 1998 Intrigue a rear-driver and I was thinking if it isn't serving a purpose I might be able to fit a drive-shaft down there.

Most front wheel drive cars have the exhaust running under there. The Original Toronado and the Chrysler Minivans show that FWD vehicles don't need to have that hump.
