Someone posted this at Oldspower...but it got me thinking, maybe Oldsmobile should break apart from GM, start their own corporation....seems hard, but if there was someone running the show that was really determined to keep oldsmobile alive...it could happen. Of course I suppose Olds probably has some kinda contract with GM...but there's always hope.

I was thinking... how cool would it be if there was an abandoned oldsmobile plant somewhere that still had all the tooling and parts to manufacture some late 60's / early 70's Oldsmobiles. They could fire that place up and pump out some new "old" cars.

the old engines probably wouldnt be able to comply with modern emission standards, so to make them driveable maybe put modern drivetrains in them. just think, a brand new 69 or 70 Cutlass / 442 with a Vortec 8100 :D (496 cu in) I bet some people would pay a TON of money for them.

it'd never be as cool as a real survivor car or anything, but still I think they'd make a ton of money.

I know it seems far fetched.... probably wouldn't happen in a million years, but it was a cool thought

Last i head via the olds g-body mailing list is that they are already producing the final cars. supposidly they are making 500 commemrotive editions or something and that they already built most of them except for the alero i think which will be done in May. I can't find the email i got about it but thats what i recall.

yeah... but think of it this way. In 10 or 20 years when olds is one of those forgotten names, and some of us who really cared for thier oldsmobiles still have our cars... Value of the car will shoot, and our cars will turn more heads...

Well, maybe not my car in particular, but you know what I mean.

I agree with 88Delta, that in the years to come SOME models maybe grow in value, however I dont think that the 1980's front drivers will reallly gain anything, maybe a pecial model like the 90 Touring Sedan or something will gain value. I have see the Final 500 Olds, and they may also be a little more valuble. The ones I think will never gain in value are the 1998-2003 Models that had lost touch with the traditonal Olds that many have come to know.

The end of the article has a good point. The oldsmobile website acts as if nothing is going on there. Even the dvd I got at the car show talks about how olsmobile is great and how u should buy an olsmobile, even gives you a fealing as though they will be around forever. Kinda wierd and annoying.

my dad is getting the intake gaskets replaced on his suburban, they gave him a brand new Final 500 Bravada to drive as a loaner car!

of course I had to take it for a spin too :D If I had that kind of money, I'd buy one and store it, hoping to sell it someday and retire off the profit!
Think the Barret-Jackson auction will still be around in 40 years?

If anything maybe GM will take some Pontiac and load it will all the options to make a special edition Olds every few years.

i wonder if once oldsmobile is GONE and everyone realises - wow, the world really ISNT a better place without olds ;-) they might bring it back like cherry coke, or flare leg (bell bottom)pants.
